SAN JOSE WINS IN 10, CUTS LEAD TO 5

The San Jose Giants came back from down 4-0 and took a 5-4 lead on the Fresno Grizzlies, ultimately winning in 10 innings, 6-5 on Thursday night. Garrett Frechette singled in the installed runner for the win as San Jose beat first-place Fresno for the second night in a row at Excite Ballpark.

The Giants (34-26) trail the Grizzlies (39-21) by five games with six to play in the first half.

QUAKES OFFENSE ROLLS BEHIND 3 HOMERS, 11 WALKS FOR 8-3 WIN OVER 66ERS

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored in six of eight turns at bat and posted an 8-3 win over the Inland Empire 66ers on Wednesday night at LoanMart Field. Julio Carrion (5) and Damon Keith (8) both hit solo homers and Luis Yanel Diaz (8) hit a two-run shot to lead Rancho Cucamonga’s nine-hit attack. The Quakes drew 11 walks with five different hitters walking twice.

The win kept Rancho Cucamonga (33-26) two games back of first-place Lake Elsinore in the South division.

NUTS ROUTE STORM 17-3

The Modesto Nuts won their third straight game on Tuesday night with a 17-3 romp over the Lake Elsinore Storm at John Thurman Field. Robert Perez Jr. led the offense with three hits and five RBIs including a double and a triple. Randy Bednar was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. Edwin Arroyo was 3-for-5 with a walk and a triple and scored four runs.

Perez Jr. leads the California League in RBIs with 57. Arroyo leads the league in hits with 72 and is fourth in batting average at .323.

FRESNO’S YANQUIEL FERNANDEZ AND BRAYAN CASTILLO NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Fresno OF Yanquiel Fernandez and Fresno RHP Brayan Castillo have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 6 – 12.

YANQUIEL FERNANDEZ – The 19-year old from Cuba was 8-for-24 against Visalia last week, launching three home runs, including a grand slam. For the month of June, Fernandez is slashing .298/.340/.617.

 

BRAYAN CASTILLO – 21-year old Brayan Castillo earned his first win of the season on Friday night with six shutout innings against Visalia. Castillo gave up just one hit and on walk while striking out six. He’s tied for seventh in the California League in Opponents Batting Average (.246) and ninth in WHIP (1.38). Over 11 innings in June, Castillo has allowed just two hits and four walks while striking out 11.

GONZALEZ GEM LEADS LAKE ELSINORE TO SERIES WIN OVER SAN JOSE

Jesus Gonzalez (W, 2-2) struck out seven batters over seven innings and allowed just two runs (1 ER) on six hits and no walks as the Lake Elsinore Storm beat the San Jose Giants 6-2 on Sunday. Carlos Duarte hit his fourth homer of the season and Victor Duarte hit his first to lead the offense.

The solo homers came back-to-back to lead off the second inning for the Storm. Two walks came around to score to make it 4-0 after two. Gonzalez made it stand up and Yerry Landinez (S, 2) threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save. Landinez gave up one hit and struck out three with no walks allowed.

GRIZZLIES RUN UP THE SCORE ON RAWHIDE, STRETCH LEAD

The Fresno Grizzlies continued their dominance over the Visalia Rawhide with a 15-5 win on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park. The home team pounded out 15 hits and drew 12 walks while blasting four home runs, including a grand slam by Trevor Boone. With the win, the Grizzlies (37-19) stretched their lead over San Jose in the North division to five games.

Victor Juarez (W, 4-0) had a dominant start, going 6IP with 0 runs allowed on 2 H, 0 BB and 6 K. Juarez leads the California League in ERA (2.41), WHIP (0.92) and Opp Batting Average (.197).

66ERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT, BEAT NUTS 10-3

The Inland Empire 66ers (28-27) got up and over the .500 mark on Friday night with a 10-3 win over the Modesto Nuts at San Manuel Stadium. Red-hot Edgar Quero had three hits including a double and his sixth home run of the season to lead the offense. Inland Empire’s 2-5 hitters each had at least two hits.

The 19-year old Quero has a 7-game hitting streak and has had three hits in three of his last five games. Quero was slashing .237/.370/.356 on May 24th and has raised those numbers to .293/.406/.473 in the 13 games since.

QUAKES EDGE PORTS 13-12, YUNIOR GARCIA HAS 5 HITS

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes had just enough to outlast the Stockton Ports 13-12 on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. In a game that lasted 3 1/2 hours, the offenses came out firing on all cylinders. 5-2, Stockton after one. 8-6, Stockton after two. The teams combined for 27 hits and 16 walks. Rancho Cucamonga pulled to within one game of first-place Lake Elsinore with the win.

STORM STRETCH DIVISION LEAD WITH 8-2 WIN OVER SAN JOSE

The Lake Elsinore Storm jumped on top with a three-run second inning and pounded out 12 hits in an 8-2 win over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday night at The Diamond. Cole Cummings had three hits and Carlos Luis had three hits and drove in three.

Bodi Rascon started for the Storm and went 4 IP with 1 run allowed on 5 hits and a walk with 1 strikeout for a ND. Levi Thomas (W, 2-0) came on for 3 1/3 innings of relief and allowed 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 3 without walking anyone for the win. Ben Miller pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up 2 hits without allowing a run or a walk and striking out 2.

GRIZZLIES POWER PAST RAWHIDE, 8-7

The Fresno Grizzlies got back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning from Warming Bernabel (6) and Hunter Goodman (14) to come from a run down and win 8-7 at Chukchansi Park on Tuesday night. Yanquiel Fernandez hit a grand slam (4) in the second inning to get the scoring started.

Diomede Sierra started for Visalia and pitched a scoreless first inning but then was touched up for 6 runs (5 ER) in the second. Fresno starter Jarrod Cande had nearly the same experience, throwing two shutout innings before the Rawhide answered with a five-run third inning. Only two of the runs were charged to Cande.
