MODESTO STAYS UNBEATEN IN 2ND HALF, 3-1 OVER SAN JOSE

The Modesto Nuts got home runs from Walking Cabrera (2) and David Sheaffer (1) and five pitchers held the San Jose Giants to one run on six hits in a 3-1 win at Excite Ballpark. At 5-0, Modesto is the only undefeated team in the second half and has at two-game lead on San Jose (3-2) in the North division.

Edwin Arroyo went 1-for-3 with two walks for the Nuts and is batting .320, second in the Cal League. The 18-year old leads the league in hits with 87.

Blake Townsend (W, 1-0) was the first pitcher out of the bullpen, inheriting a 1-1 game in the third inning. The 21-year old Australian threw two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with no walks and one strikeout to earn the win.

Reigning Cal League Pitcher of the Week Nick Sinacola (L, 4-5) went four innings for San Jose and gave up two runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to take the tough-luck loss. Hunter Dula finished the game for the Giants with 2 2/3 IP and allowed no runs or hits with one walk and three Ks.

Modesto has won the first two games of the six-game series with game three going Thursday night at 6:30PM.

GRIZZLIES BLAST PORTS WITH 6 HRs, 22 RUNS, 20 HITS

The Fresno Grizzlies (1-3) got their first win of the second half with a loud 22-2 win over the Stockton Ports on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The first-half North division champions belted out 20 hits including five doubles, a triple and six home runs.

Zach Kokoska was 4-for-6 with a triple and a homer (7). Warming Bernabel had two home runs (7, 8) and drove in five runs. Yanquiel Fernandez had three hits, including his 7th homer, and three walks and scored four times. Juan Guerrero drove in four runs.

SAN JOSE’S CARTER WILLIAMS, NICK SINACOLA NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

San Jose OF Carter Wiliams and RHP Nick Sinacola have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 20-26.

CARTER WILLIAMS –  Hit in every game last week, going 15-for-23 with six doubles and two home runs against Stockton. In 11 games since joining San Jose, Williams is slashing .553/.623/1.026.

 

NICK SINACOLA – 2021 draftee, went five scoreless innings against Stockton with no hits allowed and three walks against five strikeouts. Over 46 innings with the Giants, Sinacola’s K/9 is 10.88 and HR/9 is 1.17.

GRIZZLIES CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 4-2 WIN OVER MODESTO

The Fresno Grizzlies clinched the first-half title in the North division with a 4-2 win over the Modesto Nuts on Tuesday night at Chukchansi Park. Despite San Jose’s 10-8 win over Stockton, the Grizzlies (41-24) have a two-game lead with one to play and are going to the playoffs in back-to-back years.

The Grizzlies only had five hits, but Warming Bernabel and Benjamin Sems drove in two runs apiece.

STORM CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 14-7 WIN OVER QUAKES

The Lake Elsinore Storm clinched a playoff berth with a 14-7 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Max Ferguson had four hits, including two triples to lead the offense. Alan Mundo (W, 4-1) pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts to earn the win.

After the Quakes put up a single run in the top of the first inning, the Storm jumped on Rancho Cucamonga starter Jerming Rosario for four runs in the bottom half. Rancho Cucamonga came back for four runs in the top of the second and Lake Elsinore tied it at 5-5 in the bottom half.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA’S KENNETH BETANCOURT AND STOCKTON’S KYLE VIRBITSKY NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Rancho Cucamonga SS Kenneth Betancourt and Stockton RHP Kyle Virbitsky have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 13- 19.

KENNETH BETANCOURT– The 22-year old from Venezuela went 8-for-15 against Inland Empire last week with two doubles, one triple, and five walks with just one strikeout. In the month of June, Betancourt has hit .370/.477/.556 with 11 walks and 10 strikeouts in 54 ABs.

 

KYLE VIRBITSKY – The 2021 draft pick out of Penn State threw seven shutout innings against the Visalia Rawhide on Friday, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out nine. Virbitsky is sixth in the California League with 58 IP and ninth in strikeouts with 60.

QUAKES KEEP FIRST HALF HOPES ALIVE WITH 11-4 WIN OVER 66ERS

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes built an insurmountable lead with the help of a five-run fifth inning and went on to drop the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 11-4 on Sunday at LoanMart Field. In earning a split of the six-game series with IE, the Quakes remained three games back of the Lake Elsinore Storm with three games left to play in the first half. Those three games will be against the Storm starting Tuesday.

Julio Carrion had a bases-loaded double that brought in all three runners in the third inning to give Rancho its first lead at 3-1. The 66ers tied it up in the fourth, but the Quakes came back with two more in the bottom of the fourth and five in the fifth to build a 10-3 lead. They traded single runs the rest of the way to complete the final score.

CASTANON HOMERS TWICE AS STORM MAINTAIN 3-GAME LEAD

The Lake Elsinore Storm pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits in a 12-2 win over Modesto Saturday night to keep their lead in the South division at three games with four to play in the first half. Marcos Castanon homered twice (5, 6) and drove in five runs while five different Storm hitters had at least two hits.

Castanon was one of three Lake Elsinore batters with three hits. Albert Fabian was 3-for-4 with a home run (6) and Nerwilian Cedeno was 3-for-5 with two triples.
