GIANTS SCORE 10 ON FRESNO, TOSS 2-HITTER

The San Jose Giants and Fresno Grizzlies will be seeing quite a lot of each other this week and next, and Tuesday night’s matchup was a dominant 10-0 win for the visiting Giants. Starter Kyle Harrison (W, 4-3) allowed two hits and three walks over five shutout innings and leadoff man Najee Gaskins had three hits and scored two runs in the rout.

Scoreless after three innings, the Giants got five runs (2ER) off of Fresno starter Anderson Amarista, who made a throwing error to complicate matters for himself. JImmy Glowenke singled in a pair of runs, part of a 3-for-4 night for the San Jose second baseman.

Luis Matos and Ghordy Santos each had two hits for the Giants.

Three relievers came out of the San Jose bullpen to combine for four hitless innings, striking out six without any walks. Harrison’s eight strikeouts brought his total to 162, second in the league behind teammate Carson Ragsdale (162).

Julio Carreras was 1-for-3 with a walk for Fresno.

The season-ending six-game series continues tonight, followed by the Low-A West championship series between these two teams. Tuesday night’s win pulled San Jose (73-42) to within 1 1/2 game of first-place Fresno (72-38).

WEDNESDAY 8/4 SCORES

Jairo Pomares singled in a run in the top of the 9th inning that proved to be the difference Friday night as the San  Jose Giants beat the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5 at Chukchansi Park in Fresno. Pomares’ third hit of the game gave San Jose a 6-4 lead that held up as the Grizzlies were able to push across just one run in the bottom of the 9th.

Having just been named July’s Low-A West Player of the Month, Pomares celebrated with a 3-for-5 night and boosted his batting average up to .356 on the season.

After Fresno went up 2-0 in the first inning, San Jose came back with three runs in the second to take the lead. After a run came in on an error, 1B Tyler Wyatt doubled in two runs to give the Giants the lead. CF Luis Matos added on in the 5th with an RBI single to make it 4-2 before Fresno’s SS Julio Carreras homered in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 1-run game again.

Back came the Giants in the 6th on Luis Toribio‘s solo HR, his 5th of the year, and it was 5-3. CF Jack Yalowitz doubled in a run for the Grizzlies in the bottom of the 8th to make it 5-4 before the clubs traded single runs in the 9th.

Both clubs saw their star shortstops promoted to High-A this week as Ezequiel Tovar (Grizzlies) and Marco Luciano (Giants) moved up. The teams teams are now separated by one game in the standings and remain in the two playoff positions, with Rancho Cucamonga 6 1/2 games behind second-place San Jose.

GRIZZLIES EDGE NUTS FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN

The Fresno Grizzlies returned home from an 11-1 road trip and took the opener from Modesto 2-1 with some opportunistic offense and a strong effort from five pitchers. Fresno scored both of its runs on wild pitches and RHP Toney Locey and four relievers made them stand up for the Grizzlies’ 10th straight win.

The high-powered Grizzlies offense only got four hits but they got what they needed with single runs in the fourth and eighth innings. RF Zac Veen led off the fourth with a bunt single and SS Ezequiel Tovar followed with another, which had to be reviewed to be ruled a hit as he avoided the sweep tag on his way to first. The umpires conferred and called Tovar safe as Veen advanced to second and then went to third on a double-play groundout by 1B Grant Lavigne.  Modesto starter RHP Josiah De Los Santos then threw one to that backstop that allowed Veen to score the first run of the game.

LF Lawrence Butler went 1-for-2 with 3 walks for Stockton and also made three spectacular plays in the field. In the second inning with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Butler hauled in a high drive to the fence by Mateo Gil for the second out. The next batter was Julio Carreras who hit one past 3B T.J. Schofield-Sam for an error. Butler picked up the ball in left and gunned down Daniel Montano who was attempting to advance from 1st which prevented Drew Romo from scoring ahead of Montano. Butler later made a sliding catch in left
