TRANSACTIONS

Two of the transactions that made news before the lockout began involved players who were in the Low-A West in 2021. The Arizona Diamondbacks dealt for OF Jordan Luplow, sending SS Ronny Simon to Tampa Bay in the exchange. Simon played 77 games with the Visalia Rawhide before being promoted to High-A Hillsboro. With Visalia, Simon hit .249/.343/.475 with 15 homeruns. He has been assigned to the High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods.

Elsewhere, the Seattle Mariners acquired 2B/OF Adam Frazier from the San Diego Padres for a package that included OF Corey Rosier. Drafted in the 12th round, Rosier played one game in Rookie ball before joining the Modesto Nuts where he played 31 games and absolutely destroyed Low-A West pitching. In 118 ABs, Rosier slashed .390/.461/.585 with three homeruns and walked 18 times. The UNC Greensboro alum had a 15-game hitting streak during his 31-game stint at Modesto. Rosier may see more Low-A West pitching as he has been assigned to Lake Elsinore.

SIMON, STONE NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Visalia’s Ronny Simon and Rancho Cucamonga’s Gavin Stone have been named Low-A West Player and Pitcher of the Week for August 9 – 15.

RONNY SIMON – In five games against Lake Elsinore last week, Simon was 7-for-19 with two doubles, three home runs and five walks. The 21-year old has slashed .333/.462/.786 in August and his 15 home runs are tied for fourth in the league. On Wednesday, Simon belted two home runs in Visalia’s 7-6 win.

GAVIN STONE – The 22-year old righty threw six dominant innings against Inland Empire on Friday, allowing four hits and no runs or walks with 12 strikeouts. At 101 Ks on the season, Stone is fourth in the league. Over his last five starts (23 2/3IP) Stone has walked one batter with 36 strikeouts.

RAWHIDE HANG ON FOR 11-10 WIN OVER STORM

The Visalia Rawhide put six runs on the board in the second inning Saturday night to get out to a big lead, then held on for an 11-10 win over the Storm at Lake Elsinore. 1B Elian Miranda went 2-for-5 and belted his ninth home run to lead the offense as the Rawhide won for the third time in four games.

The six-run inning saw Visalia draw six walks along with two singles and a Miranda double. Lake Elsinore starter Jairo Iriarte was chased after just 10 batters, having allowed the first six hitters of the second inning to reach base without recording an out.

GRIZZLIES DROP RAWHIDE IN EXTRAS

SS Ezequiel Tovar homered and drove in three runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 1th inning as the Fresno Grizzlies won a see-saw battle with the Visalia Rawhide Friday night. The Rawhide scored single runs in the 10th and 11th innings but couldn’t put the game in the win column as Fresno tied it back up in the 11th and won on the strength of Tovar’s two-run double to end it.

Fresno starter RHP Will Ethridge went five innings allowing one run on three hits and striking out six with no walks as the Grizzlies held on to an early 2-1 lead. Tovar, the Colorado Rockies’ #20 prospect per MLB Pipeline, tacked on a run with a solo homer in the fifth.

Visalia rallied for two runs in the eighth to tie it at 3-3 on a Ronnie Simon single to RF where Zac Veen let the ball get past him and two runners  scored. Simon was thrown  out at the plate, which would prove crucial as the game ended up going to extra innings.

RHP Fineas Del Bonta-Smith went two innings in relief for the Grizzlies, striking out six. He allowed an unearned run to score by the installed runner in the 10th after pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Rawhide fell to 1-9 on the season. RHP Brandon Pfaadt went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Grizzlies are 7-3 and tied with Modesto for first place in the North division.
