GIANTS OUTLAST STORM WITH LATE RUNS, 6-5

The San Jose Giants scored five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to edge the Lake Elsinore Storm 6-5 at Excite Ballpark Thursday night. The Giants rallied back from a 4-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh.

A wild pitch cut the lead to 4-2 before Najee Gaskins singled in a pair of runs to tie the game up at 4-4. After holding Lake Elsinore scoreless in the top of the eighth, Yorlis Rodriguez tripled in a run to break the tie, followed by a sac fly by Dilan Rosario to make it 6-4 San Jose.

LATE RALLY, BULLPEN SECURE STORM WIN

The Lake Elsinore Storm got the tying run in the seventh inning and then rallied for three runs in the eighth for a 5-2 win in Visalia over the Rawhide Wednesday night. Starter Levi Thomas went four strong innings and three relievers covered five scoreless innings the rest of the way.

2B Max Ferguson had two hits, including a triple, and LF Lucas Dunn had two doubles and drove in two runs in the eighth inning rally for Lake Elsinore.

RAWHIDE EVEN SERIES WITH GRIZZLIES

The Visalia Rawhide got a balanced hitting attack from the offense and an eye-opening debut from lefty Jake Rice out of the bullpen as they beat the Fresno Grizzlies 8-3 at Valley Strong Ballpark Wednesday night. The home team’s 10 hits were spread all across the lineup and the Grizzlies made an uncharacteristic four errors to help Visalia’s cause.

The Grizzlies got on the board first with a two-run homer from 2B Mateo Gil, his sixth of the year, in the second inning off of Visalia starter Luke Albright. Visalia got three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. DH Jefferson Espinal doubled in a run, followed by a wild pitch to tie the game. Glenallen Hill Jr. singled in Espinal to put Visalia on top.

The teams traded runs in the third inning. Grizzlies RF Zac Veen singled  in a run to chase Albright in his pro debut after 2 1/3 innings. Visalia’s Adrian Del Castillo tripled to lead off the bottom of the third and LF Tim Tawa brought him home on a groundout to make it 4-3, Rawhide.

After RHP Alex Valdez finished the third inning in relief of Albright without incident, Visalia went to the lefty Rice and he throttled the Grizzlies offense for 3 1/3 innings, flashing 95 mph heat per the stadium scoreboard. Rice (W, 1-0), a ninth-round pick in this year’s draft, allowed just one hit and no walks with six strikeouts while pounding the strike zone: 43 pitches, 36 strikes.

The Rawhide chased Fresno starter RHP Noah Gotsis in the fourth as they added on with an RBI single from SS Ryan Bliss. A wild pitch by LHP Will Tribucher made it 6-3. Visalia tacked on two more in the seventh on a 2-RBI single from 2B S.P. Chen.

Chen went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Espinal was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

The Grizzlies (61-31) lost a game in the standings to San Jose (57-35) but still have a four-game  lead. Visalia split their last two series and now are 1-1 with Fresno in this series. Rancho Cucamonga (51-40) is now 5 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot.

QUAKES SHUT OUT 66ERS

Rancho Cucamonga RHP Gavin Stone went six scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts as the Quakes shut out the Inland Empire 66ers 4-0 on Friday night in San Bernardino. Stone (1-2) picked up his first professional win and the visiting Quakes got home runs from DH Jorbit Vivas and 3B Luis Diaz.

The scoring started in the fourth inning as Diaz launched a 2-run shot, his second of the year to put Rancho up 2-0. Vivas followed with a solo shot in the fifth, his 12th. LF Ismael Alcantara capped off the night with an RBI triple in the ninth.

SAN JOSE’S 9-RUN INNING LEADS TO 4TH STRAIGHT WIN

All but one San Jose batter had a multi-hit game on Friday night as the Giants posted a 14-3 win at Modesto. 1b Abdiel Layer went 4-for-6 and C Rodolfo  Bone went 4-for-5 with a HR (1) to lead a 21-hit attack.

The Giants went up big early as they scored nine runs without hitting a home run in the second inning. 15 men came to the plate as San Jose had 10 hits and drew two walks to go up 9-0. Modesto starter Brayan Perez was chased after 1 2/3 having given up 9 earned runs on 12 hits and a walk.

San Jose got 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings but Eddy Diaz doubled in 2 runs in the top of the 10th and LHP Tanner Propst made it stand up. The Grizzlies won 5 of the 6 games to take a 2-game lead in the North with the best record in the Low-A West, 39-21.

GIANTS WIN OPENER AGAINST QUAKES

In a battle of first-place clubs, the San Jose Giants belted out 14 hits and drew eight walks to drop the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 9-5 on Tuesday night. LF Alex Canario blasted two home runs (5, 6) and SS Marco Luciano hit his 9th bomb of the year.

Giants starter Ryan Murphy went 3 1/3 IP allowing 4 runs (3ER) on 5 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts. The Giants bullpen stopped the back-and-forth scoring by holding the Quakes to just one run the rest of the way. Righty Austin Reich (W, 3-0) went 2 2/3 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and no walks with four strikeouts. RHP Clay Helvey finished off the game, going 2 IP with no runs, hits or walks and five strikeouts for his sixth save of the season.

The win put the Giants (29-14) up by three games in the North division while the Quakes’ lead in the South shrunk to 2 1/2 games.

VISALIA WALKS OFF WITH FOUR IN THE 9TH INNING

The  Visalia Rawhide beat the Fresno Grizzlies for the first time in 13 tries this season with a four-run bottom of the 9th inning to walk-off with a win. Fresno took a 9-6 advantage into the home half of the 9th but Visalia got what it needed as CF Glenallen Hill Jr. capped off the rally with an RBI single to win it, 10-9.

Each team scored in five different half innings. 1B Neyfy Castillo led Visalia’s 14-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with a triple. Reliever Bobby Ay pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit and three walks with a strikeout and picked up the win when the offense came through.
