PORTS WIN WITH BIG INNING, 9-4 OVER STORM

The Stockton Ports put up five runs in the fifth inning and went on to win 9-4 over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark.  Jhoan Paulino doubled in two runs in the decisive rally and Junior Perez hit his 11th homer of the year to power the Ports to victory.

Yehizon Sanchez (W, 2-5) went five innings and gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

STORM WINS THIRD STRAIGHT

The Lake Elsinore Storm got eight hits, including three home runs, from the #2-5 hitters and beat the Stockton Ports 7-4 on Wendnesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Jackson Merrill homered (2) and drove in four runs to lead the 11-hit attack.

Angel Solarte was 3-for-4 with an RBI from the #8 hole. The team’s other eight hits all came from the middle of the order as Merrill, Juan Zabala, Marcos Castanon and Samuel Zavala each had two hits. Castanon hit his eighth home run, Zabala hit his third.

YANQUIEL FERNANDEZ, LIAM NORRIS NAMED PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Fresno OF Yanquiel Fernandez Visalia LHP Liam Norris have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for August 8-14.

YANQUIEL FERNANDEZ– The 19-year old from the Cuba went for 9-for-26 with three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs against Inland Empire last week. On Thursday night, Fernandez homered and drove in six runs. For the month of August he is hitting .333/.386/.706 with four home runs.

 

LIAM NORRIS – On Saturday night against Modesto, Norris earned his first professional win and didn’t allow a hit over five innings. In a 69-pitch effort (44 strikes), Norris walked one and struck out four as Visalia went on to win 3-1. Over two starts in August opponents are batting .111 against Norris and his WHIP is 0.75.

66ERS DROP FRESNO FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN, 13-9

The Inland Empire 66ers won for the third night in a row and earned a series split with a 13-9 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Sunday night at San Manuel Stadium. David Calabrese had four hits and Edgar Quero and Adrian Placencia both homered as the 66ers pounded out 17 hits.

The Grizzlies got three unearned first-inning runs but Inland Empire came back with 12 unanswered runs over the first four innings. Quero hit his 14th home run of the season in the bottom of the first and Placencia followed with his ninth.

VISALIA SHUTS DOWN MODESTO OFFENS FOR 3-1 WIN

The Visalia Rawhide held the Modesto Nuts to just three hits in a 3-1 win at John Thurman Field on Saturday night. Liam Norris (W, 1-7) had his best outing of the season and picked up his first win while Ivan Melendez hit his first professional home run to lead the visitors.

Norris went five shutout innings and did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out four. Three relivers covered the last four innings and allowed just one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

RAWHIDE BACK IN WIN COLUMN, 4-3 OVER MODESTO

The Visalia Rawhide broke a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Modesto on Friday night at John Thurman Field. Jose Cabrera (W, 2-1) pitched six strong innings and the Rawhide broke a 3-3 tie with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth for the winning margin.

Cabrera gave up three earned runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over his six innings. Over three starts since joining Visalia from the complex league, Cabrera has thrown 17 innings (at least 5 IP in all 3 starts) and walked three while striking out 15. California League opponents are batting .227 against the 20-year old from the Dominican Republic and his WHIP is 1.06.

QUAKES EVEN SERIES WITH 9-7 WIN OVER STORM

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes raced out to a 7-0 lead and held on for a 9-7 win over Lake Elsinore on Wednesday night at The Diamond. New Quake Nick Biddison hit his first home run and fellow newcomer Kyle Nevin had two hits, a walk, two RBIs and scored three runs.

The visitors scored in each of the first four innings before Lake Elsinore got on the board with an RBI single from Samuel Zavala to make it 7-1.

NUTS BLANK RAWHIDE BEHIND CARLSON’S GEM

The Modesto Nuts scored six runs in the fourth inning and Sam Carlson  threw seven dominant innings against the Visalia Rawhide for a 6-0 win on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field. The Nuts (23-14) won for the seventh time in their last ten games and kept their lead in the North division at three games over Fresno.

Carlson (W, 3-1) went seven innings and allowed two hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Of his 86 pitches, 60 were strikes. Riley Davis covered the last two innings and gave up one hit with no runs or walks while striking out two.

AXEL SANCHEZ AND VICTOR JUAREZ NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Modesto SS Axel Sanchez and Fresno RHP Victor Juarez have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for August 1 – 7.

AXEL SANCHEZ– The 19-year old from the Dominican Republic went for 10-for-27 with two doubles, four home runs and 15 RBIs against Stockton last week. Sanchez joined Modesto on July 30th and in eight games has batted .382/.475/.882. On Wednesday he was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and seven RBIs.

 

VICTOR JUAREZ– Against San Jose on Thursday, Juarez threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out seven. The 19-year old from Mexico is second in the California league in WHIP (1.25), third in batting average against (.235) and third in ERA (4.64).
