LAKE ELSINORE WINS 2022 CALIFORNIA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Lake Elsinore beat the Fresno Grizzlies 3-2 to finish off a two-game sweep of the California League championship series on Tuesday night in Fresno. It is the fourth championship for the Storm (1996, 2001, 2011, 2022).

Victor Lizarraga went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts for the win. Duncan Snider pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, preserving the lead on one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.

Lake Elsinore put two runs on the board in the second inning with a sac fly from Tyler Roberston and an RBI single from Jakob Marsee. It stayed 2-0 until the seventh inning when Marsee singled in another run to make it 3-0.

Fresno cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer by Sterlin Thompson to chase Lizarraga after 85 pitches. Neither side would score again, and the Storm celebrated on the field at Chukchansi Park.

MERRILL LEADS STORM TO 1-0 LEAD IN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Jackson Merrill went 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs as Lake Elsinore routed Fresno in game one of the California League championship series by a score of 13-2. Five Storm batters had multi-hit games.

Jakob Marsee homered and went 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Marcos Castanon went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Fernando Sanchez started and went 4 1/3 IP for Lake Elsinore, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and seven strideouts.

Will Geerdes went 3 2/3 innings and picked up the win in relief. Geerdes gave up a run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Game two of the best-of-three series will be on Tuesday night in Fresno at 6:50PM

FRESNO, LAKE ELSINORE IN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

The Fresno Grizzlies and the Lake Elsinore Storm finished off their division series and advanced to the California League championship series, which starts Sunday at 1PM in Lake Elsinore.

FRESNO AND LAKE ELSINORE GO UP 1-0

The Fresno Grizzlies and Lake Elsinore Storm took 1-0 leads in their three game playoff series on Tuesday night:

The Grizzlies scored six first-inning runs and added six more the rest of the way to run away with game one of the Division Series. Jordan Beck went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Braxton Fulford had two doubles and three RBIs.

Fresno used five pitchers, with Cullen Kafka getting the win in relief. Kafka pitched three scoreless innings and gave up three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Game two is on Thursday night in Fresno.

The Storm took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning and put the game out of reach with six runs. Griffin Doersching was 3-for-5 with two home runs. Jackson Merrill and Nerwilian Cedeno had two hits each. Five Grizzlies had at least two hits.

Victor Lizarraga went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out nine. Will Geerdes threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up no hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Game two is at Lake Elsinore on Thursday night at 7:15.

The playoffs start on Tuesday night with two best-of-3 series:

FRESNO at SAN JOSE
LAKE ELSINORE at INLAND EMPIRE

Per the playoff procedures, The four winners of each half will qualify for the playoffs and if one team wins both halves, then the team in that division with the next best record over the full season will qualify.

Fresno won the North divsion in both halves. San Jose had the next best record over the whole season so it’s them and Fresno to see who goes to the championship series. Lake Elsinore won the South in the first half and Inland Empire won it in the second half, setting up their series.

STORM TOP QUAKES 4-1

Victor Lizarraga went 5 1/3 strong innings and Samuel Zavala clubbed a two-run homer as the Lake Elsinore Storm beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a score of 4-1 on Wednesday night at LoanMart Field. Jakob Marsee hit his first home run to lead off the game for the Storm and three relievers shut out the Quakes over 3 2/3 innings.

Lizarraga (W, 8-3) allowed one run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Hazahel Quijada finished off the sixth inning by getting two outs with no hits and one walk allowed. Aaron Holiday covered two innings with no runs or hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Manuel Castro nailed down the win with his first save by throwing a scoreless ninth inning despite allowing two hits.

66ERS WIN IN 10 OVER VISALIA

The Inland Empire 66ers pushed across a run in the 10th inning to knock off Visalia by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday night at Valley Strong Ballpark. The win gave IE (37-24) a five-game lead in the South division with five to play.

Adrian Placencia launched a two-run homer, his 11th, in the first inning to get the 66ers off to a 2-0 lead.  Visalia’s Oscar Santos cut the lead in half with his sixth homer of the year in the third inning.

QUAKES OUTSLUG 66ERS IN 10

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rallied for two runs in the 10th inning to knock off Inland Empire by a score of 16-14 on Wednesday night at San Manuel Stadium. Jake Vogel singled in the go-ahead run, his fourth hit of the game, and Nick Biddison added on the 16th run with his fifth hit of the night.

Vogel was 4-for-6 with a walk, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Biddison was 5-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored.
