Modesto’s Jimmy Kingsbury and  Kelvin Nunez combined to throw a no-hitter in the Nuts 7-0 win over Stockton on Friday night, the first no hitter in the Cal League since 2019. Kingsbury went the first seven innings and walked one batter while striking out 10. Nunez handled the 8th and 9th with no walks and three strikeouts. This was the third no-no in Modesto Nuts history, the last one coming in 2013.

Corey Rosier hit his third homer of the season and Trent Tinglestad had four hits to lead the Modesto offense. Rosier is now slashing .417/.489/.620 in 29 games for the Nuts.

Kingsbury was perfect in five of his seven innings. Junior Perez stuck out with one out in the third but reached first when the third strike got away from C Eric Jones. Perez stole second and when Jack Winkler reached on an error, Kingsbury was faced with a two-out, first-and-third jam. The righty out of Villanova induced a groundout to end the inning.

Kevin Richards drew a one-out walk in the fifth and was replaced on base when Perez followed with a FC grounder. Perez stole second again, but Kingsbury got another groundout to end the threat. He yielded to Nunez after seven innings having thrown 87 pitches, 64 for strikes.

Kelvin Nunez

Nunez went six up/six down over the final two innings on 18 pitches, 15 of them strikes. Together, Kingsbury and Nunez walked one and struck out 13. With business being handled quickly most of the night, the time of the game was 2:06.

Tinglestad led Modesto’s 14-hit attack with 4, while Rosier, Spencer Packard and Cesar Izturis Jr. had two hits apiece.

 

BLISS CYCLES in visalia’s 7-3 win

Visalia SS Ryan Bliss hit for the cycle, including his 6th homer of the season, in Visalia’s 7-3 win over Rancho Cucamonga. Avery Short (W, 2-5) gave up two runs over five innings and John Carver earned his first save as he allowed one run over four innings of relief.

Bliss homered in the first, doubled in the third, tripled in the sixth and then got a single in the ninth to complete his rare feat. He had a 10-game win streak snapped on Thursday night but got back into the hit column in a big way on Friday.

Deyvison De Los Santos hit his third homer of the year for Visalia and Shane Muntz blasted his second.

Yeiner Fernandez belted his first homer of the year for the Quakes.

The top two teams in the league continued to size each other up for next week’s championship series and the Giants have had the better of it so far. Luis Matos and Jimmy Glowenke each had two hits as San Jose won for the third time in four games in this season-ending series. Pitcher of the Week/Month honoree Randy Rodriguez (W, 6-3) went 3 1/3 innings and allowed one hit with no runs or walks while striking out six.

LAKE ELSINORE – 0

Jack Kochanowicz and Nick Mondak combined for the Cal League pitching effort of the night any other time, but their 1-0 shutout of Lake Elsinore happened to fall on a night when there was a no-hitter elsewhere. Jose Reyes doubled in a run in the fourth inning for the 66ers and that was it for both sides. Kochanowicz gave up three hits and didn’t walk anybody while striking out five over four innings. Mondak (W, 2-0) gave up one hit and no walks while striking out five. This game did edge out the Modesto no-hitter with a time of 2:03.

San Jose (74-42) wins its 7th straight, closes in on Fresno (72-39) for the division lead, just 1/2 game back. Luis Matos went 2-for-4 with a walk and a HR (15). Harrison Freed with his 8th HR, a grand slam in the ninth to provide the winning margin. Jimmy Glowenke 1-for-3 with three walks. Fresno’s Mateo Gil went 3-for-5 and knocked in five runs.

Walk-off win for Rancho on a Yeiner Fernandez RBI single. RHP Kyle Hurt threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief with no hits, one walk and three Ks. Four Quakes pitchers held the Rawhide to just two hits. RHP Reinaldo De Paula (W, 2-1) finished the game, going 1 2/3 innings and allowing no runs on one hit, no walks and three Ks. Ryan Bliss hit his fifth homer of the year for Visalia.

The Storm scored their 17 runs on 13 hits and 14 walks. Cole Cummings went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored and walked three times. Five Lake Elsinore batters had two hits apiece. RHP Ruben Galindo (W, 5-4) allowed five hits over four innings, one run, and struck out six. All seven of Inland Empire’s hits were singles and the 66ers batters walked once with 13 strikeouts.

GIANTS SCORE 10 ON FRESNO, TOSS 2-HITTER

The San Jose Giants and Fresno Grizzlies will be seeing quite a lot of each other this week and next, and Tuesday night’s matchup was a dominant 10-0 win for the visiting Giants. Starter Kyle Harrison (W, 4-3) allowed two hits and three walks over five shutout innings and leadoff man Najee Gaskins had three hits and scored two runs in the rout.

Scoreless after three innings, the Giants got five runs (2ER) off of Fresno starter Anderson Amarista, who made a throwing error to complicate matters for himself. JImmy Glowenke singled in a pair of runs, part of a 3-for-4 night for the San Jose second baseman.

Luis Matos and Ghordy Santos each had two hits for the Giants.

Three relievers came out of the San Jose bullpen to combine for four hitless innings, striking out six without any walks. Harrison’s eight strikeouts brought his total to 162, second in the league behind teammate Carson Ragsdale (162).

Julio Carreras was 1-for-3 with a walk for Fresno.

The season-ending six-game series continues tonight, followed by the Low-A West championship series between these two teams. Tuesday night’s win pulled San Jose (73-42) to within 1 1/2 game of first-place Fresno (72-38).

The San Jose Giants clinched a playoff spot on Friday night with Carson Ragsdale throwing five shutout innings and adding six more strikeouts to his Low-A West leading total, now 162. The Giants beat the Stockton Ports 6-0 and locked up a post-season matchup with the Fresno Grizzlies.

Ragsdale (W, 8-6) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six in his five innings. Juan Sanchez and Clay Helvey each threw two scoreless innings in relief, combining to allow just one Stockton hit and no walks with five strikeouts.

Jimmy Glowenke had three hits for San Jose and Abdiel Layer was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Stockton’s Junior Perez had two of his club’s four hits.

Ragsdale leads the league in strikeouts (162), IP (108 2/3) and is tied for the league lead in wins (8). He’s fourth in the league in opponents’ batting average (.244). The Giants have the top four strikeout pitchers in the league and five of the top six.

San Jose had 12 hits, with all but one batter hitting safely.

The teams are set for the best-of-five championship series which starts on Tuesday, September 21st. The Fresno Grizzlies already clinched the other spot. Details on game times and locations to come.

Nathan Burns pitched two innings out of the 66ers bullpen and gave up one hit and no walks while striking out five. Rancho Cucamonga’s Luis Yanel Diaz hit his fourth homer of the season.

All four road teams won on Thursday night. Modesto won for the second night in a row at Fresno to keep its slim playoff hopes alive, but San Jose didn’t help them any with a win at Lake Elsinore. Inland Empire needed 11 innings to beat Stockton and Rancho Cucamonga bounced back with a win over the Rawhide:

The Modesto Nuts made it eight straight wins on Saturday night with a 10-7 win over Stockton. CF Colin Davis was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs while 2B Cesar Izturis Jr. was 3-for-4 with two doubles. RF Spencer Packard was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Modesto scored nine runs over the first four innings off of Stockton starter RHP Angello Infante. RHP Sam Carlson (W, 5-3) started for the Nuts and went five innings, allowing three runs (2ER) on four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.

Modesto broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with five runs, highlighted by RF Alberto Rodriguez‘ two-RBI double. That would be it for the visitors until the 10th inning. Meanwhile, San Jose chipped away, starting with an RBI double by RF Jairo Pomares in the bottom of the fourth.

C Fabian Pena hit his third homer of the year in the fifth inning to make it 5-2, Modesto. 2B Jimmy Glowenke knocked in a pair with a double in the seventh and then hit his eighth homer of the year with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to force extras.

After the two Modesto runs in the top of the 10th, LF Carter Williams singled in the installed runner to make it a 7-6 game. But Nuts right-hander Leon Hunter struck out San Jose 3B Yorlis Rodriguez to end the game.

RHP Jimmy Kingsbury started for Modesto and went 4IP, allowing two runs on six hit, no walks and six strikeouts. LHP Kyle Harrison was San Jose’s starter and he left the game after two strong innings: 0R, 1H, 1BB, 5K. No word at this time why he was pulled.

Modesto is now 47-43, eight games back of San Jose (55-35) for the second playoff spot. The Giants sit five games back of Fresno (60-30) but are still 3 1/2 games ahead of Rancho Cucamonga  (51-38) for the second and final spot.

Pomares has been on fire for San Jose, going 9 for his last 17 with two doubles and two homers. After slashing .369/.416/.709 in July, the 21-year old from Cuba is batting .429/.474/.714 over 13 games in August.

Alberto Rodriguez is hitting .365/.421/.538 in August.

Colin Davis, a 7th-round pick in this year’s draft, joined Modesto on July 28th and is 14-for-44 with two HRs, batting .318/.423, .500 over 11 games.

The San Jose Giants bounced back from three straight losses behind three home runs from the offense and a dominant combined effort from the pitching staff to beat Stockton 8-1 Saturday night. 2B Jimmy Glowenke and SS Abdiel Layer hit back-to-back homers in the 3rd inning to put the Giants up for good and RHP Prelander Berroa (W, 3-3) allowed just one hit over six innings with no walks and nine strikeouts.

The Giants carried the 3-0 lead to the bottom of the sixth where they tacked on five runs with PH Jairo Pomares blasting a three-run homer, his 10th of the season. RHP Ivan Armstrong and RHP Clay Helvey covered the final three innings with just one run allowed on an RBI single by 3B Joshwan Wright in the seventh inning. The three San Jose pitchers combined for 3H, 0BB and 13 Ks.

Glowenke has found his stroke in July, slashing .346/.446/.615 with all four of his HRs. Pomares extended his hitting streak to six games and has gone 10-for-23 over that stretch with three doubles and two home runs.

San Jose (45-26) picked up a game on the first-place Grizzlies and will look for a series split Stockton on Sunday.
