BAILEY, SWANDA NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

San Jose’s Patrick Bailey and Inland Empire’s John Swanda have been named Low-A West Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 23-29.

PATRICK BAILEY – The switch-hitting catcher hit in all six games against Lake Elsinore last week, going 12-for-25 with five doubles and a home run. On Wednesday night he was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer in San Jose’s 7-0 win. Bailey was the 13th overall pick in the 2020 draft.

 

JOHN SWANDA – On Wednesday night Swanda threw 6 1/3 innings against the Stockton Ports and allowed just one unearned run on no hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. With his sixth win of the season he is tied for third in Low-A West. He’s third in the league with 97 1/3 IP.

LAKE ELSINORE PROMOTIONS, SATURDAY NIGHT SCORES

The San Diego Padres have promoted three of Lake Elsinore’s standouts to high-A Fort Wayne. C Brandon Valenzuela, OF Robert Hassell III and INF Euribiel Angeles all are on their way to the next level after very successful stints in Low-A West.

Valenzuela is batting .307/.389/.444 on the year and he has turned it up in July and August from an already solid-start. This month he has slashed .333/.440/.460.

Hassell III is among the leaders in numerous offensive categories: Hits (118, 3rd) OBP (.415, 2nd), OPS (.897, 7th), AVG. (.323, 3rd), BBs (57, 2nd) and SBs (31, 3rd).

Angeles is the league’s leading hitter by average (.343) and hits (124), and sixth in OBP at .397. He’s ninth in OPS at .858.

Rawhide C Adrian Del Castillo went 2-for-4 and had two RBIs to lead Visalia’s offense. LHP Avery Short allowed two earned runs over five innings on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts and was awarded his first professional win. Visalia leads the series 3-2.

Del Castillo, the 67th pick overall in the 2021 draft,  has gone 7-for-17 over his last four games with seven RBIs.

3B Deyvison De Los Santos has hit in five straight, going 9-for-21 with three doubles. De Los Santos is 18 years old and was signed by the Diamondbacks out of the Dominican Republic in 2019.

Four Lake Elsinore pitchers threw the shutout, with Ruben Galindo (W, 4-3) throwing four innings of the bullpen and allowing just one hit and two walks with four strikeouts. C Gilbert Vizcarra had two hits including the game-winner, his third homer of the year.

The teams combined for just seven hits, with Vizcarra accounting for two of the Storm’s three hits.

San Jose RHP Prelander Berroa got hung with the loss (5-6) despite going seven strong innings and allowing one run on three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

The Grizzlies bounced back from three straight losses at the hands of the Nuts with 10 runs on 15 hits. Six total pitchers were needed in the wake of starter Toney Locey‘s three-inning stint and Fresno scored the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double by Drew Romo.

Romo also hit his sixth homer of the year, an inside-the-park sprint around the bases. 2B Eddy Diaz was 3-for-4 with a double. Six different grizzlies had multi-hit games.

CF Corey Rosier stayed red-hot for Modesto, going 3-for-6. The 2021 12th-round draft pick has hit in 12 straight and is 25-for-50 over that stretch. 1B Eric Jones had three hits and a walk.

TAWA’S BAT, BAKHUS’ ARM LEAD RAWHIDE

Visalia OF Tim Tawa went 5-for-5 and starter Kyle Backhus threw five strong innings as the Rawhide evened their series with Rancho Cucamonga with a 15-5 win Friday night. Tawa had two doubles, a triple, two RBIs, two stolen bases and scored three runs. Backhus allowed one run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

The Rawhide scored in each of the first five innings as they built a 12-1 lead. A five-run fourth inning gave Visalia a commanding 10-1 lead after Rancho Cucamonga got on the board in the top of the inning to make it 5-1. DH Adrian Del Castillo added on in the fifth inning with a two-run homer, his first with the Rawhide.

2B Channy Ortiz had four hits and 3 RBIs. Five Rawhide batters had multi-hit games as the team belted out 18 hits.

In back-to-back winning starts, Backhus has pitched 10 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts.

OF Jose Ramos led Rancho Cucamonga’s offense with three hits, including a double and his fourth homer of the year.

The series is even at 2-2 with two more games to play. For whatever it’s worth, Visalia has won all of its Saturday games in August.

All four road teams won on Thursday night. Modesto won for the second night in a row at Fresno to keep its slim playoff hopes alive, but San Jose didn’t help them any with a win at Lake Elsinore. Inland Empire needed 11 innings to beat Stockton and Rancho Cucamonga bounced back with a win over the Rawhide:

VEEN’S CYCLE HIGHLIGHTS FRESNO’S 12-9 WIN

The Fresno Grizzlies ended Modesto’s 10-game winning streak on Tuesday night, outlasting the Nuts in a 12-9 slugfest at Chukchansi Park. Zac Veen hit for the cycle, including his 15th homer of the season and seven RBIs.

The Grizzlies got on the board in the first inning with two runs but Modesto came back with four in the top of the second. Veen hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second as the Grizzlies scored six runs to make it 8-4.

ROSIER, RODRIGUEZ NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Modesto OF Corey Rosier and San Jose RHP Randy Rodriguez have been named Low-A West Player and Pitcher of the Week  for August 16-22

COREY ROSIER – The 2021 12th round draft pick was 10-for-18 in five games against Stockton last week including a 4-for-5 night on Thursday. Rosier walked five times over the week with just two strikeouts. Since joining the Nuts on July 31st, Rosier has batted .370./.471/.593.

 

RANDY RODRIGUEZ – San Jose reliever Randy Rodriguez made two appearances against Rancho Cucamonga last week and pitched a total of six innings without allowing a run. The right-hander allowed one hit and no walks while striking out nine. He got the win on Saturday for his four-inning effort with no runs, hits or walks against six strikeouts.

STORM BAT AROUND LATE FOR 16-6 WIN

Lake Elsinore was trailing 6-4 going to the top of the eighth inning at Inland Empire on Sunday but they turned it around quickly with an 8-run inning, followed by a 4-run ninth to win comfortably, 16-6. RF Matthew Acosta tripled in two runs to open the flood gates in the eighth inning. Acosta went 4-for-6 with a double and a triple to lead Lake Elsinore’s 16-hit attack.

CF Robert Hassell III was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, his fifth on the year, and five RBIs. Seven different Storm batters had multi-hit games.

RHP Miguel Rondon (W, 3-4) went 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.

MODESTO TOPS STOCKTON FOR 8TH STRAIGHT WIN

The Modesto Nuts made it eight straight wins on Saturday night with a 10-7 win over Stockton. CF Colin Davis was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs while 2B Cesar Izturis Jr. was 3-for-4 with two doubles. RF Spencer Packard was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Modesto scored nine runs over the first four innings off of Stockton starter RHP Angello Infante. RHP Sam Carlson (W, 5-3) started for the Nuts and went five innings, allowing three runs (2ER) on four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.

GIANTS WIN 4TH STRAIGHT OVER QUAKES, 8-4

The San Jose Giants further solidified their playoff position with a fourth-straight win at Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night, knocking off the Quakes 8-4. The Giants struck for five runs in the seventh inning on a bases-clearing double by C Fabian Pena and a two-run homer by DH Patrick Bailey his second of the night, to erase a 4-3 deficit.

The win pulled San Jose (59-35) to within three games of first-place Fresno (62-32) for the top spot in the Cal League while stretching it’s lead for the final playoff spot over Rancho Cucamonga (51-42) to 7 1/2 games.
