MODESTO WIN STREAK AT 8, NOW 2 BACK OF FRESNO

Inland Empire @ Modesto Gm 1

After splitting their recent series with first-place Fresno and failing to gain any ground in the North division, the Modesto Nuts have cut into the lead the hard way. A six-game sweep on the road at San Jose got them to within three games of the Grizzlies and on Tuesday night they won their eighth straight game, a 5-3 win over Inland Empire at John Thurman Field. That puts the Nuts two games back with 11 games left to play.

Five of those games are with the South division-leading 66ers and the final six games are in Fresno.

MODESTO STAYS UNBEATEN IN 2ND HALF, 3-1 OVER SAN JOSE

The Modesto Nuts got home runs from Walking Cabrera (2) and David Sheaffer (1) and five pitchers held the San Jose Giants to one run on six hits in a 3-1 win at Excite Ballpark. At 5-0, Modesto is the only undefeated team in the second half and has at two-game lead on San Jose (3-2) in the North division.

Edwin Arroyo went 1-for-3 with two walks for the Nuts and is batting .320, second in the Cal League. The 18-year old leads the league in hits with 87.

Blake Townsend (W, 1-0) was the first pitcher out of the bullpen, inheriting a 1-1 game in the third inning. The 21-year old Australian threw two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with no walks and one strikeout to earn the win.

Reigning Cal League Pitcher of the Week Nick Sinacola (L, 4-5) went four innings for San Jose and gave up two runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to take the tough-luck loss. Hunter Dula finished the game for the Giants with 2 2/3 IP and allowed no runs or hits with one walk and three Ks.

Modesto has won the first two games of the six-game series with game three going Thursday night at 6:30PM.
