The Visalia Rawhide broke a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Modesto on Friday night at John Thurman Field. Jose Cabrera (W, 2-1) pitched six strong innings and the Rawhide broke a 3-3 tie with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth for the winning margin.
Cabrera gave up three earned runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over his six innings. Over three starts since joining Visalia from the complex league, Cabrera has thrown 17 innings (at least 5 IP in all 3 starts) and walked three while striking out 15. California League opponents are batting .227 against the 20-year old from the Dominican Republic and his WHIP is 1.06.
The winning rally started with a single by Manuel Pena, followed by a fielder’s choice, an HBP and a walk to force in the run. Pena has hit in five straight games (8-for-19) and is batting .309/.356/.400 in 14 games with Visalia.
Pena and Brett Johnson both had two hits for the Rawhide.
Three pitchers combined to strike out 13 Modesto hitter. After Cabrera came out of the game, Alfred Morillo went two scoreless innings with no hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Listher Sosa (S, 2) handled the ninth inning and struck out two with no run or hits and one walk.
Freuddy Batista had two hits to lead Modesto. Axel Sanchez doubled and drove in two runs.
The Modesto bullpen combined for five scoreless innings. Rodney Hutchison went three innings and allowed a walk with no runs or hits and three strikeouts. Brayan Perez finished it off with two innings with no runs, hits or walks and three strikeouts.
Modesto (25-15) has won nine of its last 11 games and still has a three-game lead on Fresno in the North division. Visalia (17-23) is five games out in the South. Game five of the six-game series is Saturday night at 6:05.
