RAGSDALE SHARP IN GIANTS’ CLINCHER

The San Jose Giants clinched a playoff spot on Friday night with Carson Ragsdale throwing five shutout innings and adding six more strikeouts to his Low-A West leading total, now 162. The Giants beat the Stockton Ports 6-0 and locked up a post-season matchup with the Fresno Grizzlies.

Ragsdale (W, 8-6) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six in his five innings. Juan Sanchez and Clay Helvey each threw two scoreless innings in relief, combining to allow just one Stockton hit and no walks with five strikeouts.

Jimmy Glowenke had three hits for San Jose and Abdiel Layer was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Stockton’s Junior Perez had two of his club’s four hits.

Ragsdale leads the league in strikeouts (162), IP (108 2/3) and is tied for the league lead in wins (8). He’s fourth in the league in opponents’ batting average (.244). The Giants have the top four strikeout pitchers in the league and five of the top six.

San Jose had 12 hits, with all but one batter hitting safely.

The teams are set for the best-of-five championship series which starts on Tuesday, September 21st. The Fresno Grizzlies already clinched the other spot. Details on game times and locations to come.

The Rawhide forced extras with two runs in the bottom of the ninth but Lake Elsinore put four runs across in the 10th. Gilberto Vizcarra was 3-for-5 with a HR (4) for the Storm and Cole Cummings had three hits. Visalia’s Deyvison De Los Santos was 3-for-5 with a double and starter Avery Short struck out 10 in five innings.

The 66ers walked it of with a wild pitch. Edwin Yon had three hits, including the ninth-inning triple that allowed him to score the game-winner on a pitch that got away. SS Arol Vera had a four-hit night and has hit in seven straight and 10 of 11 games he’s played with Inland Empire. Nathan Burns pitched two innings out of the 66ers bullpen and gave up one hit and no walks while striking out five. Rancho Cucamonga’s Luis Yanel Diaz hit his fourth homer of the season.

LATE RALLY, BULLPEN SECURE STORM WIN

The Lake Elsinore Storm got the tying run in the seventh inning and then rallied for three runs in the eighth for a 5-2 win in Visalia over the Rawhide Wednesday night. Starter Levi Thomas went four strong innings and three relievers covered five scoreless innings the rest of the way.

2B Max Ferguson had two hits, including a triple, and LF Lucas Dunn had two doubles and drove in two runs in the eighth inning rally for Lake Elsinore.

Sam McWilliams of Rancho Cucamonga and William Fleming of Modesto have been named Low-A West Player/Pitcher of the Week for August 30 – September 5. McWilliams was 9-for-26 in seven games against Lake Elsinore, with five doubles and three HRs. Fleming pitched twice for Modesto for a total of six IP with no runs, one hit, no walks and eight strikeouts.

HARRISON DOMINANT IN GIANTS WIN

San Jose LHP Kyle Harrison threw five scoreless innings on Thursday night and struck out 12 batters as the Giants beat the Visalia Rawhide 5-2. Patrick Bailey broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the offense.

Harrison (W, 2-3) kept Visalia off the board as he allowed just two hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out the side in the second inning after giving up a leadoff double to Adrian Del Castillo. In the fourth inning he got himself into a jam with a walk and an HBP around a Wilderd Patino double, but ultimately recorded all three outs via the K.

SS Abdiel Layer had three hits for San Jose.

San Jose (65-40) has won two of the first three games of the series with Visalia and is back to within three games of first-place Fresno (68-37).

SIX-RUN INNING DRIVES MODESTO

The Modesto Nuts put up six runs in the third inning on Tuesday night and went on to an 11-5 win at home over Inland Empire. A 2-0 deficit was erased and four pitchers covered the distance for the Nuts, who won for the seventh time in their last 10 games.

DH Corey Rosier singled in two runs to tie the score at 2-2 to get the third-inning outburst started. Robert Perez and Trent Tinglestad singled in runs before Brett Rodriguez capped off the big inning with a sac fly.

Bryce Miller started for Modesto and went three innings, allowing two runs (1ER) on four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Leon Hunter (W, 5-1) went 3 1/3 and allowed 2ER on one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts. After a clean inning from Matthew Willrodt, Juan Mercedes pitched the final 1 2/3 innings with no runs allowed on one hit, no walks and five strikeouts.

The Modesto pitchers racked up 18 strikeouts.

Colin Davis was 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead the Nuts. Alberto Rodriguez also had three hits.

Modesto closed to within six games of San Jose for the final playoff spot.

PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK BAILEY HOMERS, GIANTS SHUTOUT RAWHIDE

Reigning Cal League Player of the Week Patrick Bailey hit his fifth homer of the season as the San Jose Giants beat Visalia 7-0 on Tuesday night. Bailey went 2-for-2 with two walks and five San Jose pitchers put up zeroes as the Giants broke a three-game losing streak.

The Giants jumped on Visalia starter Adrian Del Moral for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and put up single runs in each of the next four innings. Meanwhile, LHP Nick Swiney and LHP Juan Sanchez were scattering five hits and four walks without allowing any runs. Righty Abel Adames covered the sixth and seventh innings and RHPs Jesus Tona and Cole Waites finished it off, both throwing one clean inning.

Sanchez (W, 4-2) went 2 1/3 IP and allowed three hits and a walk with one strikeout.

1B Luis Toribio was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Leadoff man Ghordy Santos was 2-for-4 with a walk and a triple and scored three runs.

Deyvison De Los Santos and Caleb Roberts each had two hits for Visalia.

BAILEY, SWANDA NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

San Jose’s Patrick Bailey and Inland Empire’s John Swanda have been named Low-A West Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 23-29.

PATRICK BAILEY – The switch-hitting catcher hit in all six games against Lake Elsinore last week, going 12-for-25 with five doubles and a home run. On Wednesday night he was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer in San Jose’s 7-0 win. Bailey was the 13th overall pick in the 2020 draft.

 

JOHN SWANDA – On Wednesday night Swanda threw 6 1/3 innings against the Stockton Ports and allowed just one unearned run on no hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. With his sixth win of the season he is tied for third in Low-A West. He’s third in the league with 97 1/3 IP.
