RANCHO CUCAMONGA’S KENNETH BETANCOURT AND STOCKTON’S KYLE VIRBITSKY NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Rancho Cucamonga SS Kenneth Betancourt and Stockton RHP Kyle Virbitsky have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 13- 19.

KENNETH BETANCOURT– The 22-year old from Venezuela went 8-for-15 against Inland Empire last week with two doubles, one triple, and five walks with just one strikeout. In the month of June, Betancourt has hit .370/.477/.556 with 11 walks and 10 strikeouts in 54 ABs.

 

KYLE VIRBITSKY – The 2021 draft pick out of Penn State threw seven shutout innings against the Visalia Rawhide on Friday, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out nine. Virbitsky is sixth in the California League with 58 IP and ninth in strikeouts with 60.

FRESNO’S YANQUIEL FERNANDEZ AND BRAYAN CASTILLO NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Fresno OF Yanquiel Fernandez and Fresno RHP Brayan Castillo have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 6 – 12.

YANQUIEL FERNANDEZ – The 19-year old from Cuba was 8-for-24 against Visalia last week, launching three home runs, including a grand slam. For the month of June, Fernandez is slashing .298/.340/.617.

 

BRAYAN CASTILLO – 21-year old Brayan Castillo earned his first win of the season on Friday night with six shutout innings against Visalia. Castillo gave up just one hit and on walk while striking out six. He’s tied for seventh in the California League in Opponents Batting Average (.246) and ninth in WHIP (1.38). Over 11 innings in June, Castillo has allowed just two hits and four walks while striking out 11.

INLAND EMPIRE’S EDGAR QUERO AND KELVIN CACERES NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Inland Empire catcher Edgar Quero and RHP Kelvin Caceres have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 30 – June 5.

EDGAR QUERO – Inland Empire’s Quero went 9-for-22 against Visalia last week with 2 doubles and  3 home runs. The 19-year old from Cuba scored 7 runs and drove in 6. After batting .214 in the month of April, Quero has raised his average to .276 and his OBP for May was .406, followed by .526 over the first four games of June.

KELVIN CACERES– Over two relief appearances against Visalia last week, Caceres tossed five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine. On Sunday, he went four innings and struck out nine while picking up his third win of the season.

SAN JOSE’S VAUN BROWN, MASON BLACK NAMED PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE MONTH FOR MAY

MiLB named San Jose’s Vaun Brown Mason Black Player and Pitcher of the Month for May. From MiLB.com:

VAUN BROWN – San Jose Giants outfielder Vaun Brown batted .448/.538/.885 and led the league in hits (39), runs (25), average (.448), on-base percentage (.538), slugging percentage (.885) and OPS (1.423). He finished second in triples (three) and home runs (nine) and was fourth in stolen bases (14) and fifth in RBIs (15). He hit safely in 19 of 22 games and recorded 14 multi-hit games. Brown, 23, was selected by the Giants in the 10th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Florida Southern College.

MASON BLACK – San Jose Giants right-hander Mason Black went 1-0 and did not allow a run in four starts, covering 19 2/3 innings. He only allowed two runners to reach third base in May as he scattered 12 hits and three walks while striking out 22. Opponents batted .169 against him before he was promoted to High-A Eugene on May 24, where he then set a career-high with 10 strikeouts in his debut for the Emeralds. Black, 22, was selected by the Giants in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Lehigh University.

SAN JOSE’S VAUN BROWN, FRESNO’S MASON GREEN NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

San Jose OF Vaun Brown and Fresno LHP Mason Green have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 23-29.

VAUN BROWN – San Jose’s Brown went 11-for-19 against Modesto last week with five doubles and a triple. The 2021 draft pick is now second in the league in batting average (.362), first in OPS (1.103), third in HR (11), third in runs scored (37), and fourth in OBP (.447). Brown had four multi-hit games last week, including two three-hit games.

MASON GREEN – 2021 draft pick Mason Green had his longest outing of the season last week, 7 1/3 innings against Stockton and allowed no runs on 3 hits and a walk with 9 strikeouts. It was his second straight start of 7 innings or more with no runs allowed. Green is leading the league in ERA (1.93) and IP (46 2/3), third in WHIP (1.11), and eighth in strikeouts (46).

INLAND EMPIRE’S D’SHAWN KNOWLES AND FRESNO’S VICTOR JUAREZ NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Inland Empire OF D’Shawn Knowles and Fresno RHP Victor Juarez have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 16-22.

D’SHAWN KNOWLES – In six games against San Jose last week, Knowles went 11-for-21 with four doubles and a home run. The 21-year old from the Bahamas is third in the Cal League in hits (44), tied for fourth in batting average (.331) and fifth in OBP (.438). He is riding a 7-game hitting streak and has reached base in his last 13 games.

VICTOR JUAREZ – Fresno’s 18-year old right-hander threw six scoreless innings against Rancho Cucamonga, giving up just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts. Earning his third win, Juarez is now tied for second in the Cal League with 3. He’s also second in WHIP (1.02), third in ERA (2.80) and sixth in IP (35 1/3).

FRESNO’S HUNTER GOODMAN, VISALIA’S LIAM NORRIS NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Fresno catcher Hunter Goodman and Visalia LHP Liam Norris have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 9 – 15.

HUNTER GOODMAN – Fresno Grizzlies catcher Hunter Goodman was 12-f0r-26 against Visalia last week with a double, a triple and three home runs. Included were two three-hit games and one five-RBI game. His nine home runs have him third in the league and his .598 SLG is also good for third. Goodman was drafted in the fourth round last year out of Memphis.

LIAM NORRIS – Visalia’s Liam Norris went 5 1/3 innings against Fresno on Sunday with no runs allowed on one hit and one walk while striking out eight. It was the longest outing of Norris’ career. With 36 strikeouts he is tied for sixth in the league and his 1.04 WHIP would be tied for the Cal League if he had another 1 2/3 innings to qualify. Norris was drafted in the third round of the 2020 draft.

 

QUAKES’ KEITH, STORM’S HAWKINS NAMED PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL

Late on this, last week MiLB named Damon Keith of Rancho Cucamonga and Garrett Hawkins of Lake Elsinore as California League Player and Pitcher of the Month. From MiLB.com:

DAMON KEITH – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Dodgers) outfielder Damon Keith led the league in on-base percentage (.519), slugging percentage (.672) and OPS (1.191) and was second in average (.391), hits (25) and runs (19). He finished third in triples (two) and fourth in total bases (43). Keith, 21, was selected by the Dodgers in the 18th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of California Baptist University.

GARRETT HAWKINS – Lake Elsinore Storm (Padres) right-hander Garrett Hawkins went 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four starts. He struck out 26 batters and walked just one over 18 1/3 innings. Hawkins, 22, was selected by the Padres in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of British Columbia.

BROWN, ROSARIO NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

San Jose OF Vaun Brown and Rancho Cucamonga RHP Jerming Rosario were named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 2 – 8.

VAUN BROWN – In five games at Stockton last week, Brown was 11-for-23 (.478) with four homeruns. Having homered in his last four games, Brown is now tied for second in the Cal League with six on the season. Brown was picked in the 10th round of the 2021 draft out of Florida Southern.

JERMING ROSARIO – 20-year old Rosario threw five shutout innings on Friday night at Lake Elsinore with no hits or walks while striking out six. The only Storm hitter that reached base was on an HBP. Rosario threw 59 pitches, 42 for strikes.

AMADOR, BEDNAR NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Fresno SS Adael Amador and San Jose RHP Will Bednar have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 25 – May 1.

ADAEL AMADOR – Fresno’s 19-year old SS hit in all six games and went 11-for-26 with two doubles and four home runs against Stockton. Amador is leading the league in homeruns (6), and is fourth in the league in batting average (.359), fourth in OBP at (.463), second in SLG (.654) and second in OPS (1.117).

Amador was signed by the Rockies out of the Dominican Republic in 2019.

WILL BEDNAR – The #14 overall pick in last year’s draft threw five hitless innings with no runs, two walks and five strikeouts against Modesto on Wednesday night. Bednar is leading the California League in WHIP (0.60) and opponents batting average at 094 and is second in ERA at 1.62.
