The Modesto Nuts caught the Fresno Grizzlies in the North division with a 5-4 win in game one of their season-ending series in Fresno. The Nuts built a 5-0 lead, then held on as Fresno rallied to cut the lead to one in the ninth.
Both teams are 40-21 in the second half and need a division title to make the playoffs. San Jose won the first half.
Modesto got on the board in the top of the first with a run-scoring balk and a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, Brock Rodden doubled in two runs to make it 4-0 and eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.
Fresno finally got to Modesto starter Darren Bown (W, 4-2) in the sixth inning and put three runs on the board to cut it to 5-3. Bowen allowed three runs over six IP on four hits and three walks with two Ks.
The Grizzlies scratched for a run in the ninth but came up short at 5-4.
Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 6:50PM.
