PORTS WALK OFF WITH 4-RUN NINTH

The Stockton Ports came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 7-4 and rallied for four runs to beat the Modesto Nuts 8-7 on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Kevin Richards hit two home runs (9, 10), including a game-tying two-run shot in the ninth, as the Ports won for the second night in a row. Nick Brueser walked it off with an RBI single.

Modesto jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead off of Stockton starter Mitch Myers and made it 6-0 with two runs in the third. Gabe Moncada hit a two-run shot in the first inning, his 2nd, and Axel Sanchez did the same in the third inning, launching his fourth of the year.

STORM MOVE INTO 1ST-PLACE TIE WITH 2-HITTER

The top four hitters in Lake Elsinore’s batting order all had multi-hit games and Victor Lizarraga won his sixth game of the season as the Storm beat Visalia 10-1 on Saturday night at Valley Strong Ballpark. It was the eighth win in 10 games for Lake Elsinore (20-15) and pulled them into a first-place tie with Inland Empire in the South division.

After two first-inning runs, the Storm added three more in the third with Marcos Castanon blasting a two-run homer, his 15th long ball of the season. Nerwilian Cedeno hit a grand slam (3) in the seventh inning to make it a 9-0 lead. Cedeno was 2-for-5 with five RBIs.

66ERS WALK AWAY WITH WIN AFTER 5-RUN EIGHTH

The Inland Empire 66ers erased a two-run deficit with a five-run eighth inning that saw just one base hit and topped Rancho Cucamonga 10-7 on Tuesday night at LoanMart Field. Four walks, a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice all figured into the game-winning rally.

Arol Vera led Inland Empire’s 11-hit offense with a 2-for-4 day, including his fourth home run of the year, two RBIs and four runs scored. Alexander Ramirez was 2-for-2 with a double and a triple.

CARLOS LUIS, JOEY WALSH NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Lake Elsinore SS Carlos Luis and Inland Empire LHP Joey Walsh have been named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week for July 25 – 31.

CARLOS LUIS– The 22-year old from the Dominican Republic went for 12-for-22 with five doubles and a home run against Stockton last week, raising his batting average to .320, tops among active Cal Leaguers. His 98 hits are tied for fifth in the league and his 25 doubles are tied for second. In July, Luis slashed .333/.413/.467.

 

JOEY WALSH – Over seven shutout innings against Visalia on Wednesday, Walsh gave up just one hit and walked three while striking out four to earn his third win of the season. Over four July starts, the 24-year old from Boston College pitched 22 innings and allowed 11 hits with seven walks and 20 strikeouts. Opponents batted .155 against him and he lowered his ERA for the season from 6.68 to 4.85.

MODESTO BEATS UP ON FRESNO PITCHING FOR 18-5 WIN

The Modesto Nuts scored multiple runs in five innings, topped off by a seven-run sixth, in an 18-5 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Sunday at John Thurman Field. Robert Perez Jr. led the way with four hits and seven RBIs as the Nuts collected 13 hits and drew 10 walks.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, Modesto shot to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, then made it 5-1 with a two-run rally in the second. They took a break in the third, then scored 13 runs over the next three innings.
