PORTS COME TO LIFE LATE TO BEAT SAN JOSE IN 10

The Stockton Ports scored two in the eighth, two in the ninth to force extras, then pushed across a run in the 10th for a 5-4 victory over San Jose at Excite Ballpark Thursday night. The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and were cruising with a 4-0 lead before Stockton mounted it’s late comeback.

After finally denting the scoreboard with two eighth-inning runs, the Ports tied it up on a Brayan Buelvas double, followed by a sac fly in the ninth. The deciding run came in on a double-play grounder in the 10th.

VEEN, GUARATE NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

San Jose OF Zac Veen and  Lake Elsinore RHP Carlos Guarate have been named Low-A West Player and Pitcher of the week for July 12-18.

ZAC VEEN – The Colorado Rockies’ top prospect hit safely in all five games he played against Stockton last week, going 12-for-18 and reaching base safely in 15 straight plate appearances. Veen hit five home runs over the week and in July he is slashing .333/.433/.754.

 

CARLOS GUARATE – Guarate came out of the bullpen on Wednesday and threw six shutout innings against Visalia. The 20-year old right hander didn’t allow a hit or a walk while striking out 6. Yesterday, Guarate was promoted to High-A Fort Wayne.

WEDNESDAY SCORES

Big innings and blowouts in Low-A West action on Wednesday night. Inland Empire had an 11-run inning and San Jose had an 8-run inning. Three of the winning teams scored in double-digits and only Fresno had to squeak by with a 5-0, 1-hit shutout win.

Edwin Yon  of the 66ers had the box score line of the night, going 4-for-5 with 2 HRs (7) and 9 RBIs. His second homer was a grand slam. In July, Yon is hitting .406/.513/1.063.

SATURDAY NIGHT SCORES

FRESNO – 7
VISALIA – 5

The Grizzlies (29-18) kept pace in the North division, staying four games back of San Jose with the win. SS Ezequiel Tovar stayed hot with a 2-for-4 night including his seventh homer of the  season. It was Tovar’s fourth straight multi-hit game. Visalia outhit Fresno 14-8 but came up short. Fresno has won three of the five games so far and go for a series win today while Visalia is looking for a split.
