RAWHIDE ALUMS THOMAS AND PFAADT HELP BRING DIAMONDBACKS EVEN IN NLCS

The Arizona Diamondbacks fell behind the Philadelphia Phillies two games to none in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series but have evened it up at 2-2 with some big performances by former Visalia Rawhide players.

Last night, trailing two games to one in the series, the Diamondbacks gave up an early lead and fell behind 5-2 going to the bottom of the seventh inning. They put a run on the board in the seventh and trailed 5-3 in the eighth when 2019 California League championship game hero Alek Thomas came to the plate and belted a two-run home run to tie the game. The Diamondbacks tacked on the go-ahead run and closed out the game to pull even with the Phillies in the series.

On Thursday, 2021 Rawhide alum Brandon Pfaadt faced the Phillies with the Diamondbacks trailing the series 2-0. The rookie shut out the Phillies over 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out nine. The Diamondbacks won the game on a walk-off single from Ketel Marte.

It was a clutch performance for the rookie who went 3-9 in an up-and-down season that saw tremendous struggles and a couple of trips back to the minor leagues. Pfaadt also shut out the Dodgers over 4 1/3 innings in the divisional series.

Game five is tonight in Phoenix.

RAWHIDE ON THE WEB

RawhideThe eventful 2014 Visalia Rawhide season saw the team go on lengthy streaks, both winning and losing, and ended up in an all-or-nothing game in the Cal League finals. Lancaster shot down Visalia’s dreams of ending the 36-year title drought that has become known as Chopper’s Curse with a 3-2 series win that gave the Jethawks their second California League title in three seasons.

Nevertheless, 2014 was a huge success for the Rawhide on many levels and Jeff Wiser of InsideTheZona.com has posted a look-back on the season that was. There was a lot of magic at Recreation Park over the summer and it culminated in playoff baseball. But beyond the appearance of celebrated alum and 1980 AL Rookie of the Year Joe Charboneau, there was an impressive crop of new talent on the field that led to a championship series berth.

Take a look at Wiser’s post that sums up the players that made this a great year for the Diamondbacks’ hiA affiliate:

Brandon Drury is playing 3B and batting in the #3 hole for the Visalia Rawhide this season. Selected by the Braves in the 13th round of the 2010 draft, Baseball America now has Drury ranked as the Diamondback’s #10 organizational prospect.

The Diamondbacks acquired Drury in the trade that sent Justin Upton to Atlanta and Martin Prado to Arizona. After a down year at loA in the SAL in 2012 (.229/.270/.333), Drury repeated the level in 2013, only in the Midwest League, with breakout results: .302/.362/.500, 15 homers and 51 doubles.

I had a chance to talk to Brandon Drury at Recreation Park in Visalia just before the 2014 season kicked off:

YOU CAME OVER TO THE DIAMONDBACKS FROM THE BRAVES. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE, BEING TRADED WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP IN THE BRAVES ORGANIZATION?
It was definitely weird, especially being signed at the young age of 17 so all I knew was the Braves. So then, to wake up in the morning and get traded to the Diamondbacks it kind of shocked me a little bit but, at the same time, it is an honor to be traded for a guy like Justin Upton.
