QUAKES EVEN SERIES WITH 11-7 WIN OVER SAN JOSE

Kyle Nevin led off the game with his third home run of the season and went 3-for-5 to lead Rancho Cucamonga’s offense in an 11-7 win over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday night at Excite Ballpark. The two division leaders have split the first two games of the six-game series.

The Giants got a solo home run from Diego Velasquez in the bottom of the first to even up the score and went on to a 3-1 lead after five innings. But the Quakes put up six runs in the sixth to make it 7-3. Back came the Giants for one in the seventh and three in the eighth to tie it up again at 7-7.

But South division-leading Rancho Cucamonga had the final word with a four-run ninth inning, highlighted by Nick Biddison‘s two-run double.

Kenneth Betancourt was 3-for-4 for the Quakes with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

San Jose starter Gerelmi Maldonado went four IP with just the leadoff homer as the only hit allowed. Maldonado didn’t walk anybody while striking out eight.

Game three of the six-game series is Thursday night at 6:30PM.

MODESTO POWERS PAST RANCHO CUCAMONGA

Modesto’s Marcelo Perez

The Modesto Nuts scored in four of the first five innings and then withstood a late rally to drop the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a score of 6-4 on Friday night at John Thurman Field. Marcelo Perez (W, 1-0) went six shutout innings and struck out seven while allowing one hit and one walk to earn his first California League win.

The Nuts jumped on June’s Cal Legue Pitcher of the Month Jared Karros for three runs on five hits, including back-to-back home runs from Freuddy Batista and Miguel Perez in the second inning. Batista had three hits to pace Modesto’s 10-hit attack.

The Nuts built a 6-0 lead before Dayton Dooney launched a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to get Rancho Cucamonga on the board. The Quakes pushed across two more runs in the ninth to close the gap, but the Nuts held on for their third win in the first four games of the series.

Gabriel Gonzalez was 1-for-5 for Modesto and is tied for the league lead in hits with 63, while his .339 batting average is also tops. Batista’s .317 average is good for sixth.

Game five of the six-game series is Saturday night at 6:05PM. The Nuts are 28-27, eight games behind San Jose in the North division, while Rancho Cucamonga (33-22) leads the South division by 4 1/2 games.

BLOG MAINTENANCE

This site’s been down because the company that hosts it is garbage. Back-and-forth with malware problems. I’ve moved another blog off of this place and no problems at the new place. This one’s going with it, hopefully over the weekend. I expect to post more Cal League stuff tonight or in the morning.

HOWELL HOMERS, FOUR PITCHERS SHUT DOWN NUTS IN SAN JOSE WIN

The San Jose Giants stretched their North division lead to five games with a methodical 7-1 win over the Modesto Nuts on Saturday night at John Thurman Field. Scoring in five different innings, the Giants put up seven runs on 10 hits.  Andrew Kachel and Carter Howell homered and four pitchers held the Nuts to one run on five hits.

San Jose built a lead with a steady offense that put up two runs in the second inning, two in the third and one in the fourth. Kachel’s third homerun of the year made it 6-0 in the sixth and Modesto had just three singles of offense to that point.

The Nuts got on the scoreboard when a run came in on a sac fly in the eighth, then Howell countered with his 4th home run of the season in the top of the ninth.

Reggie Crawford started for San Jose and went 1 2/3 scoreless innings before giving way to Esmerlin Vinicio who shut out the Nuts for another 2 1/3.

Gerelmi Maldonado (W, 1-0) was the long man with 4 IP, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Dylan Cumming finished it off with a scoreless ninth.

Howell was 2-for-5 for the Giants and leads the California league with 60 hits. His .337 batting average is second only to Modesto’s Gabriel Gonzalez (.350), who went 1-for-3.

Seven of the top 10 batting averages in the league belong to Giants and Nuts players: Gonzalez, MOD (.350), Howell, SJ (.337), Diego Velasquez, SJ (.329), Onil Perez, SJ (.307), Matt Higgins, SJ (.306), Freuddy Batista, MOD (.300) and Kachel (.299).

San Jose has won three of the first five games of the series with the finale on Sunday at 2:05PM.
