The Modesto Nuts jumped out ahead with a five-run second inning and went on to an 8-4 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Friday night. Jared Sundstrom homered for the second straight night to give the Nuts a 2-1 lead and Marcelo Perez pitched six one-hit innings to lead the Nuts to their fifth win in their last six games.
The Nuts have taken four of the first five games of the six-game series at John Thurman Field.
Sundstrom, a 2023 10th-round draft pick, has gone 4-for-11 in three games with Modesto, including a double and two home runs. His second-inning shot erased an early 1-0 deficit and the Nuts were off to the races.
Meanwhile, Perez (W, 2-3), kept the Rawhide bats quite with just one hit and one earned run allowed over six innings. The right-hander threw 79 pitches (60 strikes) and didn’t walk anyone while striking out six.
Josh Hood singled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 13.
Gabe Moncada was 2-for-4 for Modesto with two doubles and two RBIs.
Gavin Conticello belted his 12th homer of the season in the first inning to put Visalia up 1-0. That ties Conticello for fourth in the Cal League.
Visalia’s Danyer Sanabria singled in two runs in the seventh inning, extending his hitting streak to eight games (10-for-29).
Anderson Rojas had two hits and drove in a run for Visalia.
The Nuts (14-15) look to get to the .500 mark in the second half with game six on Sunday at 6:05PM. Visalia is 11-18.
