The Modesto Nuts scored multiple runs in five innings, topped off by a seven-run sixth, in an 18-5 win over the Fresno Grizzlies on Sunday at John Thurman Field. Robert Perez Jr. led the way with four hits and seven RBIs as the Nuts collected 13 hits and drew 10 walks.
After giving up a run in the top of the first, Modesto shot to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, then made it 5-1 with a two-run rally in the second. They took a break in the third, then scored 13 runs over the next three innings.
Harry Ford was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and four runs scored. Freuddy Batista hit his fifth homer of the year and drove in four runs.
Yeury Tatiz (W, 5-4) went five innings and gave up four runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout. Brayan Perez came on for two innings and gave up a run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Fresno starter Jarrod Cande (L, 4-3) was chased after three innings and charged with eight runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The relief didn’t fare much better until late in the game.
Modesto (18-12) won five of the six games against Fresno and has a two-game lead in the North division. The Grizzlies (15-15) are three games back. The Nuts head to Stockton for a six-game series on Tuesday while Fresno will host San Jose.
