Rancho Cucamonga RHP Gavin Stone went six scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts as the Quakes shut out the Inland Empire 66ers 4-0 on Friday night in San Bernardino. Stone (1-2) picked up his first professional win and the visiting Quakes got home runs from DH Jorbit Vivas and 3B Luis Diaz.
The scoring started in the fourth inning as Diaz launched a 2-run shot, his second of the year to put Rancho up 2-0. Vivas followed with a solo shot in the fifth, his 12th. LF Ismael Alcantara capped off the night with an RBI triple in the ninth.
Meanwhile, Stone (W, 1-2) and relievers Elio Serrano and Carlos Alejo were putting zeroes up on the board. Stone finished his 6IP with just four hits and no walks allowed along with his season-best 12 Ks. Serrano went 1 2/3 IP and allowed a hit while striking out one. Alejo (S, 6) covered the final 1 1/3 and struck out four while allowing just one hit and no walks.
Stone crossed the 100 K mark for the season, with 101 strikeouts over 70 IP against 20 walks.
Inland Empire’s 3B Carson Matthews had two hits for his third straight game. The 21-year old joined the 66ers on July 29th and in nine games is hitting .314/.415/.343.
Rancho Cucamonga improves to 49-37 on the season and, with San Jose’s loss Friday night, creeps to within five games of the second and final playoff spot.
