PLAYER OF THE WEEK: TAYLOR KOHLWEY

OF Taylor Kohlwey finished off his stay in A ball with Player of the Week honors. Kohlwey slashed .609/.667/.783 for the Lake Elsinore Storm and earned a promotion to the Padres’ AA club in Amarillo.

Kohlwey played for the Storm in 2017 and briefly in 2018 and got off to a .387/.444/.532 start this season.

 

GORE NAMED CAL LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

MacKenzie Gore of the Lake Elsinore Storm was named Cal League Pitcher of the Week for two starts in which he struck out 18 batters over 9 1/3 innings. The lefty allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks over the two outings.

Gore was the third overall draft pick in 2017 and is ranked as the #14 prospect in all of baseball by MiLB.com.

EXTRA-INNING DRAMA

The first Friday night slate of games featured two extra-inning contests as Visalia needed 10 innings to get past San Jose and Modesto and Lancaster went 11. Padres #2 prospect MacKenzie Gore earned his first Cal League win for the Lake Elsinore Storm and Rancho Cucamonga knocked off Stockton.

OPENING NIGHT 2019

The 2019 California League season kicked off tonight with all eight teams in action, including the defending champions, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. It was a pretty good night for the road teams to spoil some home openers. These matchups will continue through the weekend with four-game series all around. Here are the final scores:

STORM SWEEPS PORTS WITH 6-3 WIN

The Lake Elsinore Storm reached the .500 mark on the season with a 6-3 win over Stockton on Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep over the Ports. DH Ty France hit a bloop double in the third inning that drove in two runs and LHP Joey Lucchesi went five innings for the win.

With the home victory and Rancho Cucamonga’s loss in San Jose, the Storm are now one game out of first place.

Lucchesi was named Cal League Pitcher of the Week on April 30 and after notching the win to go to 3-0, he now has a WHIP of 0.86 and an ERA 1.66. Over 38 IP he has walked just 10 and struck out 44.

After France’s double, a popup that got lost in the sun, put the Storm up 2-0 in the third inning, Stockton came back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Lake Elsinore tied it in the bottom of the fourth, then went up 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a WP that scored a run and an RBI single from 2B Peter Van Gansen.

The loss dropped Stockton to 16-18, four games behind Modeso in the North.

QUAKES’ PETERS, STORM’S LUCCHESI HONORED

Rancho Cucamonga’s DJ Peters has been named Cal League Player of the Week while Lake Elsinore’s Joey Lucchesi took home Pitcher of the Week honors.

Peters slashed .400/.545/.960 and had two doubles, four homers and 11 RBI in 25 ABs. Saturday night against the Storm, Peters went 2-for-5 with a HR, 3 RBI and 2 R.

Lucchesi threw six shutout innings at Visalia last Tuesday, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out eight.

WEEKEND MATCHUPS

All eight Cal League teams are 21 games into the season with the Modesto Nuts (13-8) and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (13-8) atop the divisions. Modesto has a two-game lead in the North over Stockton (11-10) and Visalia (11-10) and is three games up on San Jose (10-11).

The Quakes are four games clear of Lake Elsinore and Lancaster, both 9-12, while Inland Empire sits five games out at 8-13.

Starting for Rancho Cucamonga tonight is RHP Mitchell White (1-1, 2.35). White is the Dodgers #10 prospect per MLBPipeline and ranks #19 by Baseball America. Opponents are hitting .248 against the 2016 second-round draft pick and White’s WHIP is 0.98.

In San Jose tonight, the Giants will send RHP Mike Connolly to the mound. Connolly is making his fourth start and checks in with a record of 1-2 with a 1.26 ERA. The 2013 draftee out of Maine has walked four against 13 strikeouts on the season.

 

 

STORM RELIEVERS MAKE EARLY OFFENSE HOLD UP

storm_logoThe Lake Elsinore Storm had a five-run second inning, then held on for a 7-6 win with some clutch relief pitching to avoid a sweep at Inland Empire Wednesday night.  The 66ers had the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning, but were turned away.

The Storm jumped on IE starter Harrison Cooney (L, 1-9) for five runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth. Felipe Blanco and Nick Torres each singled in a pair of runs in the second, then Auston Bousfield brought home a run on a sac fly and Marcus Davis chased Cooney with an RBI single in the fourth.

STORM BEATS RAWHIDE IN PITCHER’S DUEL, 3-1

storm_logoThe Lake Elsinore Storm scored two deciding runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 3-1 victory over Visalia, avoiding a sweep in the three-game series. A crowd of 6,096 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore saw the home team break  up a tense pitching duel and knock off the juggernaut Rawhide.

Visalia starter R.J.Hively went six strong innings, striking out 10, but was matched by Lake Elsinore’s Ronald Herrera, who gave up just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings. Gabriel Quintana doubled in a run for the Storm in the bottom of the fourth to break the scoreless tie. In the top of the sixth, Visalia’s Jamie Westbrook singled in a run to tie it up.
