PITCHER OF THE WEEK – RHP BRYAN RODRIGUEZ, LAKE ELSINORE
Rodriguez still doesn’t have a win this season, but against Modesto on Friday, the tall right-hander out of the Dominican Republic struck out 10 with no walks and only two hits over seven innings. It was easily Rodriguez’ best outing of the season for Lake Elsinore as he set season-highs for strikeouts and IP. Even with an 0-3 record, Rodriguez ranks eighth in the Cal League with a 1.17 WHIP and fourth with an ERA of 2.54.

After spending 2012 in the Cal League, Jacobs started 2013 at AA, then returned to Rancho, where he has played for all of the 2014 season so far.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – RHP MATT BUSCHMANN, STOCKTON
RHP Matt Buschmann started the season with AAA Stockton, but after an elbow injury, Buschmann was assigned to Stockton to rehab. His second start with the Ports was a clean, six-inning outing against Modesto where he allowed no runs, no hits and two walks with seven K’s. The two starts were good enough to get the 30-year old from Vanderbilt is back with Sacramento.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – 2B, LANCASTER
Kemp filled up the boxscores from Tuesday through Sunday with multi-hit games each day, including two four-hit games. The 2013 fifth round pick out of Vanderbilt leads the California League in batting average (.372), OBP (.463), hits (55) and runs scored (44) and is in the top-10 for BB’s and stolen bases. After earning SEC Player of the Year honors in 2013, Kemp has brought his dangerous, top-of-the-order skills to pro ball.

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLAnother week goes by and the storylines just continue to be written. The division races are going in opposite directions, but the roster moves have started in earnest, and the Cal League has seen elite talent move out and move in this week. Here’s a quick look and some observations:

BLAZE EXTEND NORTH DIVISION LEAD

Last week at this time the Visalia Rawhide found itself in a tailspin of six-straight losses and that turned to seven-straight on Saturday. But a Sunday win over High Desert was the first of three for the Rawhide and the club won tonight to make it four wins in their last six games. Nevertheless, the Bakersfield Blaze went one better and stretched their lead to five full games in the standings. Bako’s making a strong case for the first-half title.

STATUS QUO FOR THE BIG-3 IN THE SOUTH

The compelling 3-team pileup at the top of the South division saw no change as Lake Elsinore, High Desert and Lancaster all checked in tonight at 21-15. (Am I crazy, or do Lancaster and High Desert play each other every night? Just a scheduling anomaly this early season?). There’s no telling how this first-half race will end up.

MOVIN’ ON

RHP Jimmie Sherfy stopped by the Cal League long enough to let a few hitters know he’s a very uncomfortable AB for them. With his quirky delivery and mid-t0-high 90’s fastball, Sherfy came out of the Visalia bullpen 11 times and mostly ran roughshod over opposing batters. In 11 IP, Sherfy allowed six hits while walking five and striking out 23. Last night the Southern League got a taste of Sherfy’s stuff as he posted a clean inning and struck out two batters.

RHP Mike Hauschild appeared in eight games for the Lancaster Jethawks before being promoted to AA Corpus Christi. The Dayton, OH native had four starts and four relief appearances for the Jethawks.

OF Brennan Gowens made the move from Inland Empire to the AA Arkansas Travelers this week. Gowens is 3-for10 in his first three AA games with a walk and a run scored.

NEW FACES

The Sherfy promotion opened up a spot on Visalia’s roster for RHP Aaron Blair, the Diamondbacks’ #5 prospect by Baseball America’s rankings and #3 by MLB.com’s. A first-round pick in 2013, Blair impressed in his  Cal League debut last night with seven strong innings against Stockton.

RHP Michael Clevinger joined Inland Empire this week from the loA Burlington Bees and had a good outing against Bakersfield on Wednesday night. Clevinger was a fourth-round pick in 2011 and is ranked as the Angels’ #17 prospect.

For all the player movement involving the California League teams, go the Transactions page.

WEEKEND MATCHUPS

Inland Empire @ San Jose
Visalia @ Bakersfield
Lancaster @ High Desert
Rancho Cucamonga @ Lake Elsinore
Stockton @ Modesto

Saturday night features a stellar matchup in Lake Elsinore as Rancho’s Julio Urias (Dodgers’ #3 prospect) squares off with reigning Cal League Pitcher of the Week Joe Ross.

I’ll likely be in Visalia to see the Rawhide’s Brandon Sinnery face Bakersfield’s Drew Cisco. If Visalia is going to cut into Bakersfield’s lead, now’s the time to do it with a head-to-head matchup in Bako.

INTERVIEW: TREVOR STORY

IMG_3802Trevor Story played for Modesto in 2013 and got off to a rough start before making some adjustments at the plate to have a better second half. This year, the Irving, TX native is one of the leading hitters in the California League, checking in after Wednesday night’s action with a line of .336/.440/.566. That’s the kind of ability the Colorado Rockies saw when they drafted Story 45th overall in 2011.

Baseball America and MLB.com both have Story ranked as Colorado’s #9 prospect. He is playing both shortstop and 3B this season as the Rockies have another prospect in Rosell Herrera who also plays shortstop. The two were teammates at both Casper and Asheville and Story has played either position as assigned while climbing the minor league ladder.

I spoke with Story about his hot start to 2014 and a few other things before a recent home game at John Thurman Field:

YOU’RE OFF TO A GREAT START THIS YEAR AT THE PLATE. LAST YEAR YOU PLAYED AT THIS LEVEL AND STARTED SLOWLY. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO START SO FAST?
My hitting coach and I got together in the offseason and got back to what I have always done my whole life. We focused on what I did well and tried to attack that. Also, attack my weaknesses too, like chasing pitches. Really refined my approach to hit the pitches that I should hit and to not be chasing pitches.

BETTER PLATE DISCIPLINE?
Yeah, definitely.

AFTER LAST SEASON DID YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE BACK IN MODESTO?
I wasn’t sure.

IMG_3801WHEN DOES THE ORGANIZATION GIVE YOU YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR THE COMING SEASON?
I didn’t know for sure I was coming back, and I think it’s different with every organization. For us we don’t really find out until the last week of Spring Training. It’s a guessing game. You can pretty much tell where you’re going.

DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO GET PROMOTED TO THE NEXT LEVEL?
I really don’t. The way I approach it is just to go from day to day. I can’t put pressure on myself to advance levels or anything because that might have been something I was doing last year. Nothing good comes out of worrying about moving up.

WHEN YOU SEE YOURSELF RANKED ON THE VARIOUS PROSPECT LISTS, DOES THAT PUT ANY PRESSURE ON YOU?
No, it doesn’t. Pretty much my whole career I’ve been dealing with expectations with stuff like that and nobody’s expectations are higher than mine so I don’t feel any extra pressure from that.

WHEN YOU GO TO SPRING TRAINING, ARE YOU ABLE TO WORK WITH TULO WHILE YOU’RE THERE?
At Spring Training it is separated into major league and minor league, but if we have time I’ll ask him if he wants to come out and do some drills, and I’ll try to pick his brain because he’s one of the best fielding shortstops and offensive shortstops. So I like to pick his brain. If we both have some down time that is when we get together.

IMG_4628YOU HIT FOR THE CYCLE EARLIER THIS SEASON IN VISALIA. HAD YOU EVER DONE THAT BEFORE?
No, that was my first one. I started realizing that it could happen when I hit the double and I knew I just needed the triple and I just went up there and had the same approach I had all game and just tried to hit the ball hard. I hit it in the gap and right off the bat I pretty much knew I was going to third.

SO, EVERYBODY IN THE DUGOUT KNEW AND YOU WALKED UP TO THE PLATE FOR THAT AB KNOWING YOU NEEDED A TRIPLE?
Yeah. I’m pretty sure the other guys knew about it because they were pretty pumped when I did it. It’s kind of like somebody throwing a no-hitter, they’re not going to come up to you and talk to you about it.

YOU HAD GONE A COUPLE OF GAMES WITHOUT A HIT AND IT SEEMED LIKE THAT GOT YOU GOING BECAUSE YOU’VE BEEN HITTING WELL EVER SINCE.
I’m not sure, that was a while ago. I just remember we played Visalia and after I hit for the cycle I started getting pretty hot.

THE TEAM WAS IN THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR BUT YOU’RE OFF TO A SLOW START THIS YEAR. HOW TOUGH IS IT TO BE ON A TEAM THAT IS NOT WINNING, REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU’RE DOING PERSONALLY?
It’s tough when you get off to the start that we have. It wasn’t ideal, but I really believe we’re starting to come around and we’re starting to have a better feel for things team chemistry-wise. Offensive rhythm and putting up good stat lines as pitchers, keeping us in ballgames. It’s no fun to lose and being the types of competitors that we are, that’s the one thing we want to do, win.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – JOE ROSS, RHP, LAKE ELSINORE
Joe Ross of Lake Elsinore went six shutout innings against Visalia with no walks and nine strikeouts to get the Pitcher of the Week award. Ross is ranked by Baseball America as the Padres’ #10 prospect and he finished the week third in the Cal League with a 1.95 ERA. The outing against Visalia was Ross’ third shutout performance of the season.

O’Dowd was red-hot for the Nuts last week, going 14-for-26 with a batting line of .538/.552/.808. He had multi-hit games in every contest last week except for one and belted out a 4-hit game and a 3-hit game as well as a 4-RBI night. In a four-game series with San Jose, O’Dowd went 9-for-16.

ROAD TRIP: MODESTO

IMG_4662This past Saturday night was my first trip of the season up to Modesto with the Nuts taking on the first-place Bakersfield Blaze. The home team had dropped the opener, 8-4, and had Matt Flemer going against Bakersfield’s Wandy Peralta to try to even the series.

Modesto is second in the Cal League in average attendance, behind only Lake Elsinore, and the fans came out for this one 3,923 strong. There was a cold wind as the sun went down but John Thurman Field was mostly full for this matchup of clubs at the opposite ends of the North division standings. Continue reading

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLAs April came to a close and the calendar turned to May, two of the biggest stories in the Cal League involved injuries. Lancaster SS Carlos Correa missed seven games with a sore shoulder, but he returned to the field tonight in the Jethawks’ 6-3 loss to San  Jose. But earlier in the week, unfortunately, Giants OF Mac Williamson had to have Tommy John surgery and won’t play anymore this season.

CORREA RETURNS TO JETHAWKS LINEUP

Photo: MiLB.com

2012 top overall pick Carlos Correa was in the Lancaster Jethawks’ starting lineup tonight after missing seven games with a shoulder injury. Correa DH’d and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the Lancaster’s 6-3 victory over San Jose at The Hangar.

Drafted out of Puerto Rico in 2012 at the age of 17, Correa has had four minor league stops, with last season at Quad Cities being his first full pro season. There the lanky, athletic shortstop showed his advanced skills at his young age with a line of .320/.405/.467.

In Correa’s absence, Carlos Perdomo has played SS for the Jethawks and he has had a good run with a .375 batting average and a homerun that came off of a Rancho Cucamonga Quake named Kershaw.

With the win, the Jethawks improved to 17-12 and pulled to within a half-game of first-place Lake Elsinore, pending the outcome of the Storm’s game with Inland Empire.

SAN JOSE’S WILLIAMSON OUT FOR 2014

San JoseGiants #5 prospect OF Mac Williamson will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2014 season, Henry Schulman reports. Williamson has been hitting well at San Jose, .318/.420/.506, in his second season at loA. Pitchers who need this surgery tend to take over a year to get back in action, whereas position players recover more quickly. But Williamson’s 2014 season has come to a premature end.

LIVELY REPEATS AS PITCHER OF THE WEEK

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – BEN LIVELY, RHP, BAKERSFIELD
Bakersfield’s Ben Lively had another stellar week, going 2-0 while striking out 17 batters in 12 innings. His season numbers are spectacular: 5-0, 0.31 ERA, 29 IP, 13 hits allowed and just one walk against 40 strikeouts. The right-hander from Central Florida came into the season as Cincinnati’s #9 prospect and he’s been dominant for Bakersfield in five starts. MiLB.com calls him the most consistent pitcher in all of the minor leagues so far this year.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – JORDY LARA, 1B, HIGH DESERT
Lara went 10-for-24 over the week with two longballs and a line of .417/516/.792. Hitting in the middle of the Mavericks’ order, Lara knocked in 11 runs and walked six times while only striking out twice. He finished up 2013 with a promotion to High Desert and had success in 15 games. Now the Dominican Republic native is showing that it wasn’t a fluke.
