FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLAs we enter another weekend, there is a little more than a week left in the first half of the season. A full slate of Friday-through-Monday 4-game sets are underway now, and there is another series ahead for all the clubs before things come to a brief halt after the games next Saturday, the 14th. The Carolina League/California League All-Star Game is on Tuesday, June 17th in Wilmington, DE. The Cal League roster can be seen on the official league page HERE.

GREAT PITCHING TONIGHT

It’s an offense-first league and the weather is starting to heat up out here, but there were several stellar pitching performances tonight. Lake Elsinore RHP Joe Ross, the Padres’ #9 prospect,  went six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits, striking out seven against just one walk.

Up in Visalia, the Diamondbacks’ #2 prospect, RHP Braden Shipley, also went six innings, with an impressive line of 2H, 3R (0ER), 4BB and 8K.

In Rancho Cucamonga, facing the Bakersfield Blaze, RHP Jharel Cotton may have been even better than Ross and Shipley: 7IP, 4H, 1R (0ER), 0BB and 6K.

And in Modesto, the San Jose Giants and the Nuts had a tense battle, largely due to the starters having solid outings:

Ryan Bradley (SJ) – 6IP, 8H, 2R (1ER), 0BB, 6K
Ben Alsup (Mod) – 6 1/3IP, 7H, 2ER, 1BB, 6K

It can be done. Not very often out here. But it can be done.

MODESTO WALK-OFF

The Giants and Nuts went to extras tonight, tied at two, thanks largely to those great starts from Bradley and Alsup. San Jose struck for a run in the top of the 10th and Modesto had the daunting task of coming back against Steven Okert ahead of them. But they managed to pull it off. A Rosell Herrera single set the stage for a  for a walk-off 4-3 Modesto win. Great late-night drama.

Here’s the call from Nuts announcer Keaton Gillogly:

APPEL RETURNS TO JETHAWKS

2013 top overall draft pick Mark Appel has had a difficult time adjusting to pro ball and his story is getting a lot of run a year after he was taken by the Astros at #1. With the First-Year Player Draft happening Thursday-Saturday, the struggles of last year’s top pick were sure to make the news.

Appel’s situation is a little unusual in that he had an appendectomy in the offseason that undoubtedly upset his preparation for spring training. The right-hander out of Stanford started the year with Lancaster and was underwhelming before getting sent to extended spring training. The adjustment to the Lancaster rotation was cited as a problem with Appel used to pitching on the college schedule.

The Astros’ #2 prospect returned to the Jethawks last Saturday night and it didn’t go well at all. After that 1 1/3 inning disaster, Appel is now on the Inactive list, apparently with tendinitis in his right thumb.

It’s early, but this has clearly been one of the more torturous starts to a career for a top overall pick.

FRIDAY-TO-MONDAY 4-GAMERS

BAKERSFIELD @ RANCHO CUCAMONGA

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – LHP TYLER PIKE, HIGH DESERT
Tyler Pike, the Mariners’ #9 prospect, threw the first six innings of a combined no-hitter against Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday to earn Pitcher of the Week honors. In notorious hitter’s paradise in Adelanto, Pike walked just two and struck out eight while keeping the Quakes hitless. Two relievers finished off the gem.

Photo: MiLB.comOFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – 3B D.J. PETERSON, HIGH DESERT
It was a High Desert sweep of Cal League awards last week as Mavericks’ slugging first baseman D.J. Peterson batted .467/.515/.867 to take the honors on offense. Ranked #2 in the Mariners organization, the 2013 first-round pick hit two homers and drove in seven, continuing to heat up as the season moves along.

ROAD TRIP: VISALIA

IMG_4752Visalia sits just about dead-center of the sprawling California League, a couple of hundred miles south and east of San Jose and about 250 miles north of Lake Elsinore. Saturday night I took the trip down Hwy 99 to Recreation Park to see the Rawhide take on the Lake Elsinore Storm and it was a true California League game on the field. The weather couldn’t have been better and the park was jammed with 2,623 fans who saw a real fireworks show, early and late.

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLThere are just a couple of weeks left in the Cal League season’s first half, believe it or not, and the standings are starting to have serious playoff implications. The Bakersfield Blaze came into the night with a commanding five-game lead over the Visalia Rawhide in the North, having taken two of three at Recreation Park during the week. But the ‘Hide cut into that lead tonight with a late-inning comeback that combined with a shootout loss by Bakersfield at High Desert.

It would be asking a lot for Visalia to make up four games in a couple of weeks, but that is what the Rawhide will try to do in the waning days of the first half.

NEAL, SEAGER WIN WEEKLY HONORS

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – RHP ZACH NEAL, STOCKTON
Zach Neal signed with the A’s as a minor league free agent in March and began the year at AA, then pitched in AAA, before being sent to Stockton after six starts. His first outing in the Cal League was a beauty, 8 2/3 innings of three-hit ball against  San Jose, with just one unearned run against him. The 6-3, 220-lb righty out of Oklahoma struck out 11 without giving up a walk.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – SS COREY SEAGER, RANCHO CUCAMONGA
It was another big week for Seager, who at or near the top of many significant offensive categories in the California League. Hitting in every game over the week, Seager posted a line of .552/.567/.931 with five doubles, two homers and eight RBI while only striking out three times. Ranked by MLB.com as the #28 overall prospect, Seager played 27 games with Rancho last season with unspectacular results. This year he is showing his elite talent and getting better as the year goes on.

ROAD TRIP: RANCHO CUCAMONGA

IMG_4745Saturday night I found my way down to Rancho Cucamonga for a matchup between the Quakes and the first-place Lake Elsinore Storm. A night after a Yasiel Puig bobblehead giveaway packed LoanMart Field, it was Star Wars night with after-game fireworks and 4,463 fans had the place rocking again.

I wanted to get a good look at the Dodgers’ top organizational prospect SS Corey Seager as well as Padres’ #5 prospect Hunter Renfroe. Seager is all over the Cal League offensive leaderboards, as expected, and Renfroe is having a solid year at hiA after being taken 13th overall in last year’s First-Year Player Draft.

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

CLIt’s been another great week of baseball in the California League, with the ball flying despite the fact that the extreme heat hasn’t hit us yet. Tonight’s action was typical of the circuit, with the winners scoring 12, 9, 8, 6 and 3 runs. Only one shootout, as High Desert scored 8 runs in a loss, but the weather is heating up and the offenses are getting in gear as well. Here are the final scores from tonight’s action:

IE 8 – Lancaster 3
San Jose 6 – Visalia 2
Lake Elsinore 9 – Rancho Cucamonga 1
Modesto 3 – Stockton 2
Bakersfield 12 – High Desert 8

Those results have impacted the standing as follows:

The Blaze have a 3-game lead on the Rawhide in the North, with the rest of the division back near the .500 mark or below. Meanwhile, Lake Elsinore has a little separation themselves in the South after tonight’s win and the losses of Lancaster and High Desert. The Storm now have a 2-game lead on the Jethawks.

Bakersfield’s Ben Lively is on the hill tonight for a home game against High Desert with a chance to be the first 8-game winner in the Cal League. Lively is currently the only pitcher with 7 wins in the circuit and will be squaring off against Tyler Pike of the Mavericks.

Taken in the fourth round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft, Lively is the Reds’ #12 organizational prospect and has been dominant over nine Cal League starts. With a total of 55 2/3 IP, he leads the league in wins (7), WHIP (0.70), strikeouts (65) and ERA (0.81).

The Pensacola, FL native has only walked seven batters and his one loss was a six-inning outing against Lancaster in which he gave up one run on four hits and struck out seven while walking two.

FRIDAY NIGHT SCHEDULE:

Inland Empire @ Lancaster
Visalia @ San Jose
Lake Elsinore @ Rancho Cucamonga
Stockton @ Modesto
High Desert @ Bakersfield

HERO CAT IN BAKO

The national coverage of Tara the Hero Cat in Bakersfield found its way to Sam Lynn Ballpark on Tuesday for a first-pitch ceremony. The cat became a national sensation after saving a young boy from a dog attack by chasing the dog away.

The Blaze recognized their local celebrity with a first-pitch ceremony prior to the game against Lancaster:
