ROUND 1 GOES TO QUAKES

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Lancaster Jethawks squared off Monday night for the first of a four-game set with Rancho holding a slim one-game lead in the South division. The Quakes got a big night at the plate from 1B Nick Yarnall and won by score of 7-3 at The Hangar in Lancaster to stretch their lead to two games.

Yarnall smacked an RBI triple in the second inning and followed with a two-run homer in the fourth to help Rancho Cucamonga to a 4-0 lead. RHP  Gerardo Carrillo (2-2) went six strong innings allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Lefty Wes Helsabeck earned his second save with three shutout innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits with no walks while striking out five.

2B Carlos Herrera collected three hits for the Jethawks and DH Luis Castro belted his fifth homer of the season in the loss.

The series continues tonight at The Hangar with Leo Crawford (0-2) going for the Quakes and Ryan Rolison (2-0) starting for Lancaster.

THE OTHER FIRST PLACE BATTLE

In the North division, Visalia has a commanding lead and the Rawhide added to it with a 3-1 won over second-place Modesto Monday night. The win stretched Visalia’s lead to nine games and improved its home record to a ridiculous 15-3. Jeff Bain struck out eight over six innings, allowing just a run on six hits to improve to 4-1 on the season.

 

WEEKEND ACTION

All four games have gone final with the race in the Cal League South tightening up while Visalia stretched its already big lead in the North. The Rawhide got a stand-out pitching performance from Josh Green with six strong innings as he protected a four-run first inning lead withoug much drama. Here are the finals from tonight’s action:

The Rawhide now enjoy an eight game lead over Modesto in the North while Rancho Cucamonga has Lancaster just a game behind them with all four series continuing through Sunday. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: TAYLOR KOHLWEY

OF Taylor Kohlwey finished off his stay in A ball with Player of the Week honors. Kohlwey slashed .609/.667/.783 for the Lake Elsinore Storm and earned a promotion to the Padres’ AA club in Amarillo.

Kohlwey played for the Storm in 2017 and briefly in 2018 and got off to a .387/.444/.532 start this season.

 

GORE NAMED CAL LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

MacKenzie Gore of the Lake Elsinore Storm was named Cal League Pitcher of the Week for two starts in which he struck out 18 batters over 9 1/3 innings. The lefty allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks over the two outings.

Gore was the third overall draft pick in 2017 and is ranked as the #14 prospect in all of baseball by MiLB.com.

NUTS’ NEWSOME NAMED CAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

RHP Ljay Newsome earned Player Of The Month honors for April from MiLB.com. Newsome went 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA over six starts, striking out 54 batters over 36 2/3 innings.

Drafted by the Mariners in the 26th round in 2015, Newsome is currently their 30th ranked prospect by MLBPipeline.com.

DODGERS’ HILL REHABS AT RANCHO

Rehabbing Dodgers lefty Rich Hill made a start for Rancho Cucamonga and squared off with Lake Elsinore’s MacKenzie Gore Wednesday night. Hill went four scoreless innings, throwing 54 pitches (38 strikes) and allowing two hits and no runs with no walks and eight strikeouts. The Quakes won the game with two ninth-inning runs for a 4-2 final to pull even with the Storm at the top of the South Division standings at 8-6.

Gore went six innings and allowed two runs on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The score remained 2-0 until Lake Elsinore pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie it up, but the Quakes came back with two of their own in the top of the ninth with some small-ball.

 

 

EXTRA-INNING DRAMA

The first Friday night slate of games featured two extra-inning contests as Visalia needed 10 innings to get past San Jose and Modesto and Lancaster went 11. Padres #2 prospect MacKenzie Gore earned his first Cal League win for the Lake Elsinore Storm and Rancho Cucamonga knocked off Stockton.

OPENING NIGHT 2019

The 2019 California League season kicked off tonight with all eight teams in action, including the defending champions, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. The Stockton Ports announced the promotion of Taylor McCarthy to the position of General Manager on Thursday. McCarthy has been with the Ports for five years and replaces Bryan Meadows.
