The Inland Empire 66ers got a big night from C Michael Strentz and ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at LoanMart Field Saturday night. Strentz had a homer and two doubles to pace Inland Empire’s 9-hit attack.
The home Quakes, with a sold-out crowd of 4,731 looking on, got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. LF Johan Mieses led off with a double and eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout by SS Erisbel Arruebarrena.

The San Jose Giants and Bakersfield Blaze traded zeroes for most of the night before a 12th-inning walkoff single by Jeff Kobernus gave the Giants a 3-2 win, their fourth straight victory. A crowd of 2,262 at Municipal Stadium saw the home team come back from down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth.
Starter Jason Forjet allowed just one Blaze run over seven innings, striking out seven, but Bakersfield starter Brett Ash went one inning better. Ash allowed one run over eight innings, striking out eight, and left with a 2-1 lead after the Blaze pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth.

LHP Harrison Musgrave got promoted from Modesto to AA New Britain on Thursday, per the Cal League webpage. Musgrave was last week’s Cal League Pitcher of the Week and leads the circuit with 10 wins, ranks fifth with 83 strikeouts and is tied for the second-lowest WHIP at 1.10. MLB VETERAN HAPP OPTIONED TO BAKERSFIELD
In a move involving some wheeling-and-dealing leading up to the MLB All-Star break, LHP J.A. Happ was optioned to the Bakersfield Blaze by the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. Happ had a rough outing for the Mariners on Wednesday, lasting only four innings against Detroit, and it was the latest in a string of starts that has seen Happ go 1-4 with his ERA rising to 4.14 after a pretty solid beginning to the season.

The Lancaster Jethawks and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are half-way through a four-game series at LoanMart Field, with each team scoring a win so far. Rancho Cucamonga’s 6-5 win tonight moved the Quakes (7-6) to within one game of the Jethawks (8-5) in the early second-half standings of the South division.
Rancho Cucamonga is already in the playoffs as the first-half division winner and Lancaster is the defending California League champion.

Visalia topped San Jose 6-2 to move one game up on Modesto in the North while Lancaster’s 7-3 win over Lake Elsinore maintained their one-game edge on Rancho Cucamonga.

Modesto right-hander Konner Wade stuck out eight over seven innings as the Nuts beat High Desert 5-4 in Adelanto. The win, combined with Visalia’s 5-2 loss at San Jose, put the Nuts at 7-3, tied for first place in the North division.
Modesto scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second to give Wade the early 5-0 lead. CF Raimel Tapia, C Ashley Graeter and LF Dillon Thomas had two-hits apiece to pace Modesto’s 10-hit attack. RF Jordan Patterson drove in two runs.

Inland Empire erased an early 1-0 deficit and went on to a 4-3 win over Rancho Cucamonga on the strength of 3B Andrew Daniel‘s 4-RBI night and solid pitching in front of a holiday crowd of 7,282 in San Bernardino. Daniel hit his first homer since joining the 66ers, a two-run shot in the fourth inning that gave IE a 4-1 lead.
RHP Victor Alcantara, the Angels’ #8 prospect in MLB.com’s rankings, gave up a first-inning homer to Cody Bellinger to fall behind 1-0, but went on to pitch six strong innings. IE got two runs in the bottom of the frame and Alcantara never trailed again, giving up 4 hits, 2 ER and striking out 7 with no walks.

The Lancaster Jethawks had a pair of three-run innings to climb out of a 4-0 first-inning hole and went on to win 9-6 over Inland Empire at The Hangar Friday night. Marc Wik homered for the second straight night and doubled while driving in three runs in front of a home crowd of 5,722.
Inland Empire rallied big in the first inning off of Lancaster starter Evan Grills. The left-hander gave up the four earned runs when he surrendered four straight hits to the middle of the 66ers lineup, and then left the game in the second due to an apparent injury after facing just 10 batters.

RHP Dan Altavilla threw seven scoreless innings Thursday night, stiking out eight, as the Bakersfield Blaze earned a 3-2 win over the first-place Modesto Nuts by a score of 3-2 at John Thurman Field. 2B Tim Lopes singled in a pair of runs in the top of the third to give the Blaze a lead it would never relinquish.
Altavilla (3-6) is the Seattle Mariners’ #16 prospect per MLB.com (#19 by BaseballAmerica), and had his second strong, seven-inning outing in his last three starts. Lopes has gone 11-for-29 over his last seven games.
