CAL LEAGUE PITCHER/PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ZACK GODLEY (VIS), MICHAEL BENJAMIN (MOD)

For the week ending April 26

RHP Zack Godley pitched the Visalia Rawhide to two victories with 13 total innings of shutout ball, allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out 11. The 2013 10th round draft choice is now 4-0 while holding down the potent Cal League bats with a 0.79 WHIP, .172 batting average against and 1.13 ERA.

After a big year in Class A Asheville, Michael Benjamin of the Modesto Nuts got off to a slow start in hiA. That all came to an end with a a two-game outburst in Lancaster that saw Benjamin go 6-for-11 with four homers, 11 RBI and 5 runs scored. In six games over the week, Benjamin slashed to the tune of .370/.414/.963.

TWO GAMES SCHEDULED TODAY

Finally, a day off for some of the teams. On today’s schedule:

MODESTO (7-11) at HIGH DESERT (8-10)

STOCKTON (7-11) at BAKERSFIELD (10-8)

These will be three-game series in both cases, with the off day Thursday for the four teams involved.

After yesterday’s games, the Visalia Rawhide at 14-4 hold a four-game lead over Bakersfield in the North and Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga are tied at 10-8, both one game ahead of Inland Empire in the South.

RAWHIDE STAY HOT, JETHAWKS CATCH QUAKES

RawhideThe Visalia Rawhide improved to 14-3 with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Stockton on Saturday night. The win maintained the four-game lead for Visalia over second-place Bakersfield, who also won. It was the seventh-straight victory for the Rawhide.

Meanwhile, the South division got crowded at the top with a Lancaster win and a Rancho Cucamonga loss that knotted them up with identical 10-7 records. And Inland Empire sits just a half-game back on the heels of having their game with High Desert suspended due to rain.

LATE ACTION

Man, I’m off to a slow start for this California League season. I’ve got excuses all over the place but if I was trying to win a job, I got sent down. Or released. Let’s talk California League baseball.

RAWHIDE AND QUAKES OUT FAST

Eight of the 10 Cal League teams are either 9-7 or 6-10, as can be expected in a 10-team league this early. But the Visalia Rawhide have jumped out to a 13-3 mark to pace the North while the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have stepped up just slightly in the South at 10-6.  Rancho’s lost three of its last four and has a tenuous 1-game lead on Inland Empire and Lancaster.

WEEKLY HONORS: EDISON FRIAS, TODD GLAESMANN

In two games, one start, at the Hangar, Edison Frias of the Lancaster Jethawks put up zeroes over 9 IP. Yielding a combined three hits and two walks, the right-hander out of the Dominican Republic struck out a total of nine batters.

OF Todd Glaesmann of the Visalia Rawhide covered just about everything over the period observed. The big Texan earned Offensive Player of the Week honors by slashing .419/.424/1.000,  with 4 2Bs, 4 HRs and 9 RBI. But he also hit for the cycle and got promoted to AA. That’s a pretty solid week.

After four-game sets to open the season, the Cal League teams switch partners today. Here are the matchups for the slate of three-game series that run through Wednesday:

OPENING NIGHT SCORES

San Jose’s RHP Tyler Beede threw five scoreless innings in Lancaster, but Danry Vasquez singled in the winning run as the Jethawks beat the Giants, 3-2.

SS Domingo Leyba had three hits and knocked in three runs and 3B George Roberts hit a two-run homer as the Visalia Rawhide beat the High Desert Mavericks, 10-4.

LF Nick Schulz belted a two-run homer in a five-run 4th inning for Lake Elsinore as the Storm topped the Modesto Nuts, 10-3.

RHP Dylan Covey pitched five scoreless innings for Stockton and Ports rode a three-run 5th inning to a 3-1 win over the Inland Empire 66ers.

RHP Jose De Leon struck out 10 over five scoreless innings and LF Devan Ahart doubled in pinch-runner Brandon Trinkwon in the top of the 9th to break a 2-2 tie as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes topped the Bakersfield Blaze, 3-2.
