JETHAWKS BECOME PORTS IN MLB DEADLINE DEAL

The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is fast approaching and the first of what should be many deals happened yesterday with the Houston Astros and Oakland A’s swapping players. Houston acquired LHP Scott Kazmir for “a pair of minor-leaguers” who were both playing with the Lancaster Jethawks,

The A’s received C Jacob Nottingham and P Daniel Mengden, both of whom were assigned to the Stockton Ports. Nottingham had recently been promoted to Lancaster from Quad Cities where he batted .326/.387/.543 with 10 homers in 59 games. In 17 games at Lancaster, it was more of the same: .324/.368/.606 with 4 homers.

CAL LEAGUE PITCHER/PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ZACK GODLEY (VIS), MICHAEL BENJAMIN (MOD)

For the week ending April 26

RHP Zack Godley pitched the Visalia Rawhide to two victories with 13 total innings of shutout ball, allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out 11. The 2013 10th round draft choice is now 4-0 while holding down the potent Cal League bats with a 0.79 WHIP, .172 batting average against and 1.13 ERA.

After a big year in Class A Asheville, Michael Benjamin of the Modesto Nuts got off to a slow start in hiA. That all came to an end with a a two-game outburst in Lancaster that saw Benjamin go 6-for-11 with four homers, 11 RBI and 5 runs scored. In six games over the week, Benjamin slashed to the tune of .370/.414/.963.

RAWHIDE STAY HOT, JETHAWKS CATCH QUAKES

RawhideThe Visalia Rawhide improved to 14-3 with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Stockton on Saturday night. The win maintained the four-game lead for Visalia over second-place Bakersfield, who also won. It was the seventh-straight victory for the Rawhide.

Meanwhile, the South division got crowded at the top with a Lancaster win and a Rancho Cucamonga loss that knotted them up with identical 10-7 records. And Inland Empire sits just a half-game back on the heels of having their game with High Desert suspended due to rain.

LATE ACTION

Man, I’m off to a slow start for this California League season. I’ve got excuses all over the place but if I was trying to win a job, I got sent down. Or released. Let’s talk California League baseball.

RAWHIDE AND QUAKES OUT FAST

Eight of the 10 Cal League teams are either 9-7 or 6-10, as can be expected in a 10-team league this early. But the Visalia Rawhide have jumped out to a 13-3 mark to pace the North while the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have stepped up just slightly in the South at 10-6.  Rancho’s lost three of its last four and has a tenuous 1-game lead on Inland Empire and Lancaster.
