PITCHER OF THE WEEK – LINDSEY CAUGHEL, RHP, RANCHO CUCAMONGA

Caughel had his second excellent start since returning from the DL, going seven shutout innings against Inland Empire. The right-hander gave up three hits and a walk while striking out eight. He is now 4-3 on the year with a 3.81 ERA. Caughel was named Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week in 2012.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – RENATO NUNEZ, 3B, STOCKTON

Nunez had a line of .452/.500/1.065 over the seven games, including four doubles and five homers. The A’s #6 organizational prospect, Nunez was also selected to play in the Futures Games over the major league All-Star weekend. His 16 homers are tied for third in the Cal League.

NEAL, SEAGER WIN WEEKLY HONORS

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – RHP ZACH NEAL, STOCKTON
Zach Neal signed with the A’s as a minor league free agent in March and began the year at AA, then pitched in AAA, before being sent to Stockton after six starts. His first outing in the Cal League was a beauty, 8 2/3 innings of three-hit ball against  San Jose, with just one unearned run against him. The 6-3, 220-lb righty out of Oklahoma struck out 11 without giving up a walk.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – SS COREY SEAGER, RANCHO CUCAMONGA
It was another big week for Seager, who at or near the top of many significant offensive categories in the California League. Hitting in every game over the week, Seager posted a line of .552/.567/.931 with five doubles, two homers and eight RBI while only striking out three times. Ranked by MLB.com as the #28 overall prospect, Seager played 27 games with Rancho last season with unspectacular results. This year he is showing his elite talent and getting better as the year goes on.

 

 

BUSCHMANN, KEMP EARN CAL LEAGUE HONORS

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – RHP MATT BUSCHMANN, STOCKTON
RHP Matt Buschmann started the season with AAA Stockton, but after an elbow injury, Buschmann was assigned to Stockton to rehab. His second start with the Ports was a clean, six-inning outing against Modesto where he allowed no runs, no hits and two walks with seven K’s. The two starts were good enough to get the 30-year old from Vanderbilt is back with Sacramento.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – 2B, LANCASTER
Kemp filled up the boxscores from Tuesday through Sunday with multi-hit games each day, including two four-hit games. The 2013 fifth round pick out of Vanderbilt leads the California League in batting average (.372), OBP (.463), hits (55) and runs scored (44) and is in the top-10 for BB’s and stolen bases. After earning SEC Player of the Year honors in 2013, Kemp has brought his dangerous, top-of-the-order skills to pro ball.

PORTS FANFEST APRIL 12TH

StocktonThe Stockton Ports Anchor Fund will host a Fan Fest on Saturday, April 12th that is free to the public. The annual Pancakes with the Ports breakfast will also be held on that date with $5.00 tickets for the general public, $3.00 for season ticket holders.

Details are provided on the Stockton Ports webpage where the Fund’s purpose is defined along with what is included in the Fan Fest.

2013 PORTS IN A’S CAMP

StocktonThe  Oakland  A’s have two players in camp this spring that played in Stockton last season. One is obviously uber-prospect Addison Russell, while the other is C Bruce Maxwell. The Ports have a story up on their page about these two.

Russell is all over the hot-prospects lists and he dazzled at Stockton last year after making the jump from three 2012 stops at Rookie, Short Season and loA ball. The 6′ 0″, 190-lb Florida native got off for 17 homers and 60 RBI’s while posting a line of .275/.377/.508. Russell improved dramatically in the second half of the Cal League season and got into three games at AAA Sacramento.
