STORM SWEEPS PORTS WITH 6-3 WIN

The Lake Elsinore Storm reached the .500 mark on the season with a 6-3 win over Stockton on Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep over the Ports. DH Ty France hit a bloop double in the third inning that drove in two runs and LHP Joey Lucchesi went five innings for the win.

With the home victory and Rancho Cucamonga’s loss in San Jose, the Storm are now one game out of first place.

Lucchesi was named Cal League Pitcher of the Week on April 30 and after notching the win to go to 3-0, he now has a WHIP of 0.86 and an ERA 1.66. Over 38 IP he has walked just 10 and struck out 44.

After France’s double, a popup that got lost in the sun, put the Storm up 2-0 in the third inning, Stockton came back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Lake Elsinore tied it in the bottom of the fourth, then went up 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a WP that scored a run and an RBI single from 2B Peter Van Gansen.

The loss dropped Stockton to 16-18, four games behind Modeso in the North.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Friday-through-Monday four-game series are on tap:

STOCKTON at LANCASTER

INLAND EMPIRE at SAN JOSE

MODESTO at LAKE ELSINORE

RANCHO CUCAMONGA at VISALIA

SAN JOSE, STOCKTON INK PDC EXTENSIONS

downloadThe Stockton Ports and San Jose Giants will continue to be affiliated with their big-league organizations through the 2020 season as both clubs announced Player Development Contract extensions.

On April 4th, San Jose agreed to an extension with the San Francisco Giants, continuing a relationship that dates back to 1988.

StocktonStockton did the same yesterday, extending their agreement with the Oakland A’s. The Ports have been an A’s affiliate since 2005.

Many of the Cal League teams are in the final years of their PDCs, as can be seen on BallparkDigest.com’s Affiliate Dance 2016 page. The stickiest situation is probably High Desert, which is embroiled in a dispute with the city of Adelanto.  the city is attempting to have the Mavericks evicted from Stater Bros. Stadium, but the legal process has been stalled at this point.

There is a lot to the High Desert/Adelanto story and you can follow it at the Victorville Daily Press local sports section HERE.

No such drama in Stockton and San Jose. Those harmonious situations are set to go to the next decade.

PORTS EDGE NUTS BEHIND MENGDEN’S GEM

StocktonDaniel Mengden allowed a first-inning run but then shut down the Modesto Nuts over the next six innings as the Stockton Ports won a tight contest by a score of 2-1 Tuesday night. The Stockton Ports took advantage of Modesto errors to score both of its runs.

Modesto got on the board first behind a Michael Benjamin single followed by two errant pick-off throws by Mengden that sent Benjamin to third. The run came in when Benjamin scored on a steal attempt by Ryan McMahon as the throw went through to second base.

Stockton broke through in the sixth inning with a pair of walks, a fly ball out that moved Jacob Nottingham to third, and an errant pick-off attempt by Modesto’s Devin Burke.

The deciding run came across in the eighth when a botched double-play attempt put Stockton runners at first and third and Nottingham followed with a sac fly.

Modesto loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but failed to score when Correlle Prime grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

Stockton has won three straight games while Modesto suffered its fifth straight defeat and is now one game behind Visalia in the North division 2nd half standings.

JETHAWKS BECOME PORTS IN MLB DEADLINE DEAL

The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is fast approaching and the first of what should be many deals happened yesterday with the Houston Astros and Oakland A’s swapping players. Houston acquired LHP Scott Kazmir for “a pair of minor-leaguers” who were both playing with the Lancaster Jethawks,

The A’s received C Jacob Nottingham and P Daniel Mengden, both of whom were assigned to the Stockton Ports. Nottingham had recently been promoted to Lancaster from Quad Cities where he batted .326/.387/.543 with 10 homers in 59 games. In 17 games at Lancaster, it was more of the same: .324/.368/.606 with 4 homers.

ROAD TRIP: RANCHO CUCAMONGA ROCKED BY STOCKTON

IMG_5338Saturday night in Rancho Cucamonga was a perfect night for baseball. Great weather, post-game fireworks and a Corey Seager bobblehead giveaway made for a sold out ballpark. MLBers Scott Van Slyke and Joel Peralta were in Quakes uniforms with tons of Dodger blue on display in the stands.

But the visiting Stockton Ports weren’t interested in seeing the South Division leading Quakes inch any closer to a first-half title. Stockton broke out the bats and put up 14 runs on 14 hits, knocking around seven Rancho Cucamonga pitchers in the process. The final score was 14-2 and the Quakes still have some work to do to clinch a playoff berth.

IMG_5343Dodgers #9 prospect Zack Bird started for Rancho and made it through a scoreless first inning, 1-2-3. In the bottom of the first, Van Slyke doubled down the right-field line, 1B Cody Bellinger, the Dodgers’ #17 prospect, doubled him in, and after a Tyler Olge double, 3B Paul  Hoenecke brought Bellinger home on a sacrifice fly. 2-0 Rancho Cucamonga.

Stockton got on the board with a single run in the second inning, a long one for Bird, who threw 27 pitches. It was 2-1 Quakes, but that was the beginning of 14 unanswered runs to be scored by the Ports.

A six-run fourth inning was Bird’s undoing as he walked the first two hitters, gave up back-to-back doubles and walked another before being lifted. After 3 2/3 innings, Bird had given up six runs (five earned), on four hits and four walks. He took the loss and his record now sits at 2-3.

The Stockton barrage was led by 3B Matt Chapman, the Oakland A’s #3 prospect, with three hits, two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. CF Matt Vertigan had three hits including a double and scored twice while driving in two.

Ports starter RHP Raul Alcantara, the A’s #9 prospect, didn’t make it out of the third inning, allowing 2 earned runs on five hits and two walks over 2 1/3. RHP Lou Trivino put a stop to the Rancho Cucamonga offense and was impressive for 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five to earn the win.

Van Slyke ended up going 1-for-4 with the double as the DH. Peralta came on in the fifth inning and had a 25-pitch limit. It didn’t go well for the MLB veteran as he gave up two hits and a run while facing four batters. His first pitch was laced by Hoenecke into the left-field corner for a double.

Tough result for the boisterous home crowd of 4,872. With the first half winding down, Rancho Cucamonga has a real threat on its heels in the charging Lancaster Jethawks. With the Visalia Rawhide wrapping up the North Division on this night, the South race will be fun to watch this coming week.

TWO GAMES SCHEDULED TODAY

Finally, a day off for some of the teams. On today’s schedule:

MODESTO (7-11) at HIGH DESERT (8-10)

STOCKTON (7-11) at BAKERSFIELD (10-8)

These will be three-game series in both cases, with the off day Thursday for the four teams involved.

After yesterday’s games, the Visalia Rawhide at 14-4 hold a four-game lead over Bakersfield in the North and Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga are tied at 10-8, both one game ahead of Inland Empire in the South.

RAWHIDE STAY HOT, JETHAWKS CATCH QUAKES

RawhideThe Visalia Rawhide improved to 14-3 with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Stockton on Saturday night. The win maintained the four-game lead for Visalia over second-place Bakersfield, who also won. It was the seventh-straight victory for the Rawhide.

Meanwhile, the South division got crowded at the top with a Lancaster win and a Rancho Cucamonga loss that knotted them up with identical 10-7 records. And Inland Empire sits just a half-game back on the heels of having their game with High Desert suspended due to rain.

LATE ACTION

Man, I’m off to a slow start for this California League season. I’ve got excuses all over the place but if I was trying to win a job, I got sent down. Or released. Let’s talk California League baseball.

RAWHIDE AND QUAKES OUT FAST

Eight of the 10 Cal League teams are either 9-7 or 6-10, as can be expected in a 10-team league this early. But the Visalia Rawhide have jumped out to a 13-3 mark to pace the North while the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have stepped up just slightly in the South at 10-6.  Rancho’s lost three of its last four and has a tenuous 1-game lead on Inland Empire and Lancaster.
