PITCHER OF THE WEEK – RHP MATT BUSCHMANN, STOCKTON
RHP Matt Buschmann started the season with AAA Stockton, but after an elbow injury, Buschmann was assigned to Stockton to rehab. His second start with the Ports was a clean, six-inning outing against Modesto where he allowed no runs, no hits and two walks with seven K’s. The two starts were good enough to get the 30-year old from Vanderbilt is back with Sacramento.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – 2B, LANCASTER
Kemp filled up the boxscores from Tuesday through Sunday with multi-hit games each day, including two four-hit games. The 2013 fifth round pick out of Vanderbilt leads the California League in batting average (.372), OBP (.463), hits (55) and runs scored (44) and is in the top-10 for BB’s and stolen bases. After earning SEC Player of the Year honors in 2013, Kemp has brought his dangerous, top-of-the-order skills to pro ball.

ROAD TRIP: LANCASTER

IMG_4582On Saturday night I made my first trip to Lancaster to see a first-place showdown between the Jethawks and the High Desert Mavericks at The Hangar. The visiting Mavericks had won the first two games of the series to take a one-game lead in the South, including a 9-0 romp on Friday night.

FRIDAY NIGHT WRAP

It was a great week of Cal League baseball but not such a great week for me to be posting here with any regularity. All kinds of craziness went on around here, money changed hands, mysteries went unsolved, innocence was lost….well, not anything that dramatic. I was just crazy-busy and only able to keep an eye on the goings-on in the high-octane hi-A league from a distance, with no time to post anything. Here are some observations as we head into the holiday weekend.

EARLY DRAMA

With the season just underway, both divisions were being tightly contested as the teams changed dance partners on Thursday. Visalia was looking to reel in the fast-starting Bakersfield Blaze in the North while Lancaster and High Desert, in the middle of six straight matchups, shifted from Adelanto to the confines of The Hangar, with the South division lead in the balance.  The rest of the Cal League clubs were scrambling to catch up to these four.

PORTS FANFEST APRIL 12TH

STORM-TRACKING IN PADRES CAMP

Storm2014The Lake Elsinore Storm website has a story by Tyler Zickel that lists former Storm players figuring into the Padres’ plans this spring. From Peoria, Zickel notes 10 former Storm players that have agreed to terms for the upcoming season and goes on to add some perspective on some who have played in LE.

Highlighted in the piece are five former Storm players that are in Arizona with the Padres, and the list features highly notable names. From as far back as 2006 (Chase Headley) and as recently as 2013 (Austin Hedges), Zickel has some tidbits from the desert as the Padres prepare for a tough NL west battle this year.

The Padres are getting to be a trendy pick to surprise in the loaded NL west by many experts, despite the gaudy talent on the Dodgers and the championship pedigree of the Giants, as well as the 2011 division champion Diamondbacks. However the big-league club comes out this year, there are significant players in the mix that came through the minor league pipeline, some of them through LE.
