The Inland Empire 66ers got a two-out run in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extras, then Mike Peabody singled in the installed runner in the 10th for a 2-1 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Tuesday.
The 66ers were shut out for eight innings and entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 1-0. Rolondo Flores hit a ground-rule double to bring in the tying run with two outs. Flores was 2-for-4 on the night.
Quinton Martinez (W, 2-1) struck out the side in the top of the 10th. Martinez went two innings without allowing any runs or hits while striking out five.
After an intentional walk to start the bottom of the 10th, Peabody came to the plate with runners on first and second and no outs. After an unsuccessful bunt attempt, he ended the game with a ground ball into center field to score the winning run.
66ers starter Leonard Garcia went 6 2/3 innings with five runs and a walk against three strikeouts while allowing just one unearned run.
Jared Karros went four shutout innings for the Quakes with no runs, one hit, no walks and four strikeouts while getting a no-decision.
Josue De Paula was 3-for-4 with a triple for Rancho Cucamonga.
Inland Empire (6-4) remained tied for first place in the South division with the Visalia Rawhide. Rancho Cucamonga (5-5) dropped to one game back.
Game two of the six-game series is Wednesday night at 6:35PM at San Manuel Stadium.
